04 GMC 1500 to 03 2500 cluster questions!

I have a 04 GMC Sierra SLT 1500, my cluster fuel gauge is broken and I wanted the trans gauge anyway. My neighbor deals with wrecked GM trucks and he gave me a cluster from a 03 Chevy 2500 6.0L. He believes it has full D.I.C. information like my 04. (personal trip, business trip, range, avg economy, instant economy, hours, etc) Will a 03 cluster work in my 04 after I get it programed for the mileage and hours? Everything else work correctly?

Swap it and find out. Only takes about 15 minutes or less to swap

From what Ive seen, it should. Theres lots of guys that have performed that same swap with no problem.

 

On a side not, I never thought about why they had two trip meters on there, but that personal and business thing makes sense. I just use one to keep up my fuel mileage, and the other to keep up with oil change intervals.

It will work. The DIC info is up to your truck. You have to have the steering wheel buttons. All clusters can do the DIC, but the buttons are needed and programming is needed

 

I have done the swap. It was an 05 2500 HD with a 6.0 in to my 1500

Yes I have the buttons... so, that programming needs to be done as well as odo and hours in cluster? Or not worry about it since I have the buttons?

Your odo and hours need to be programmed. If the cluster was already programmed for the DIc and your truck had it factory you can try it. The worst that can happen is you have to get it programmed

Thank you so much chawkins6789! He didnt have the 03, but he just brought a 05 cluster from a 3500 gasser. I asked about the trim package on the truck, and he wasnt sure. I guess I need to take it to a dealer and have them program it for my 04?

 

edit: also, I guess your truck came with the buttons on the wheel and all your DIC functions work after your 05 swap?

No. As long as the cluster came from a 6.0/4 speed truck it will work. I had to have the cluster programmed because I added the steering wheel controls myself

I got one that was close to mine. this one is actually about 3,000 miles higher than mine was. But if you buy one and go to the dealer, they can install and program. all my other programming was done there

Thanks, I already have the 05 HD cluster in my grubby hands... Think the dealer will still program it if I didn't buy it from them? How much did they charge you?

I havent had them do mileage. usually an hr of labor. the install is easy. 4-7mm bolts. was is off a 6.0 truck?

I'm pretty sure it was, it has the 120mph speedo and 6,000rpm, the Duramax clusters I have seen are 110mph and 5,000rpm.
