Ls2 engine swap

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I have a 2008 gmc sierra slt 5.3L with a lot of engine problems and I have a spare ls2 engine that could possibly be used to swap out the old engine. I was wondering if anyone has done this and/or knows what is needed to complete the swap. Thanks

Unless you get an early one the LS2 is a Gen IV just like your 5.3. If you got one from a Trailblazer it even has the same intake manifold as your 5.3 does...... and the same heads for that matter lol. Saying that you can just use your 5.3's intake if you bought a long block or a car engine. It's a drop in plug and play affair minus any of the wiring for the active fuel management the LS2 does not have. Tune and go. That said any gen IV 6 liter will work in your truck..... or 6.2 for that matter. I prefer the cathedral heads over the rectangular ports in a pickup truck though. LS2 uses cathedrals and any other 6 liter or 6.2 Gen IV uses the rectangular port heads.

I bought it as a complete crate engine from gm 6 years ago with the upgraded CNC heads with intentions on putting it into another project truck that never happened and now I need a motor. So is this one still comparable without buying a separate ECM? Still plug and play?

Yes, drop in, plug in, retune.

As mentioned no more AFM but just delete that in tuning. Might want to add a shift kit and Yvette servo to your trans

AFM is active fuel management, the 4 cylinder mode the 5.3s go into in an attempt to save fuel. Chances are the lifter that failed is one of the AFM lifters that is supposed to "collapse" (pump down slightly would be a better explanation) on demand to allow 4 cyl mode.

Oh ok. It was cylinder 4 that collapsed and then come to fin out that the bearing was spun. Are those motors worth rebuilding and/or boring out?

I am doing this exact swap in my 07 NNBS Silverado (4.8). I am having an LS2 built with BTR stage 1 truck cam. swapping the intake, oil pan, accessories and heads (243) from the 4.8 over to the ls2. Putting on a set of Texas Speed long tubes and a y pipe. Then tuned. All built with GM Performance parts. Hoping to take some pics of the process soon.
