They built these motors to spin do let them, boat engines spend the majority of there life at rpms. I know it feels a little different, ....

If you think that these engines are going to last the normal 300k to 400k miles if you tow anything significant at 4000rpm I have a bridge to sell you.

our GMT900 Silverado with the LY2 4.8 (no VVT) and 3.24 gears tows a 16' 900 Pound Tri Hull boat on a 1700 GVWR trailer and it almost feels like there's nothing back there!

That's because at the weights you describe there almost is nothing back there.

I towed with both. my 2011 Silverado Lease with the 4.8 and 4 speed and my current 2010 Sierra 5.3 6 speed. It's not the engine but the transmission that makes the difference. my trailer weighs 6800 loaded the 2011 was rated for 7200 and it was a miserable experience. so much so that we didn't even bother camping out of the county for the last year. Lesson learned here.
