Truck revs higher when shifting into 3rd

So the last few weeks I've been having an issue when my truck was shifting into 3rd. It would rev considerably higher than it should have. I thought maybe the tune from my Diablo Predator was causing the issue but I just took off the tune and drove it around again. The revs are still up there when it tried to shift. I can get it to shift down if I let off the gas.

Any ideas what may be the culprit? From what I've found googling around, some people say it may be the servo or something more severe and my tranny may be on its way out.

I'm taking it down to a reputable shop Monday morning and they said if they can't fix it they will send it across the street to the tranny shop.

Also, on the weekend I was out camping and towing my little tent trailer around and the truck was not doing the high revs. I was driving in tow haul mode but didn't notice any overally high revs other than what tow haul does.

Well I dropped the truck off this morning. They will be taking it for a test drive to try and replicate the issue and then they try to diagnose what the issue may be. Hopefully is doesn't end costing too much...

I'll keep you all posted on the repair.

on a 2006 1/2 ton? that would mean you have the 4L60e.... you are losing 3rd gear. Your transmission is going to fail soon, this is not an uncommon symptom of a 4L60e failing.

3/4 clutch is probably toast..along with the band and everything else from operating in the nasty clutch particle-filled fluid and miles and miles of normal wear.

Yup sounds like my wallet will be getting thinner. The tranny shop told me the fluid looked burnt and something about a spline. They are going to drop the pan tomorrow and see what else they find. I'm not too shocked from all the threads i've read about this. At least it's at a reputable shop and hopefully they stay that way.

tell them to stop wasting your money ,dropping the pan does nothing except opening your wallet ,,,

They couldn't tell me what the turn around is yet but 2-3 days as it looks to be a major problem. The tech who drove me back told me that it's a simple tranny to fix and with lots of part readily available. I will wait and see what happens...

If you have a good shop, it should be okay. I'm fortunate to have a great transmission rebuilder. My last rebuild was about $1,500. Make sure they use the best parts. I had a rebuild done one time out of town by a shop recommended by a local friend, and they didn't use the Teflon coated thingamabob and transmission went out on way home! Took it to my local shop, and he showed me the non Teflon part and said they always use the better part. It was covered and I didn't have to pay again, just a hassle. Have them use best parts, even if it costs a bit more.

Good the call today with the estimates. My tranny was pretty much going to die any day soon. 3 and 4 clutch was gone, 2/4 band was done and wearing into the drum, and something about a pin holding onto something for reverse.

The estimate to rebuild to stock with oem parts was $3100 and the rebuild with all the upgraded parts, aluminum valves, upgraded drum, new brass parts, etc. was $3500. For the extra $400 on a $3k tab i decided to open my wallet a bit more. Should be built and back on the truck tomorrow afternoon or friday morning.

Sounds about right with labor. At least in Canuck dollars.

That seems outrageous to me,for that, I think you could get a seriously built tranny that could handle serious horsepower and torque even if you don't plan on adding any performance parts!

Yep...you just got 4L60'd. Obviously prices vary depending on location and shop, but that seems a little high.

For what its worth, I had my trans rebuilt last summer. 5 pinion planetaries, high energy clutches and band, worked over valve body, TransGo converter...I told them to build it for a mild 6.0. Cost $1800.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
