Yea, the only P rated tires I've run are the stock ones. I've had to patch one of my fronts, not bad for 33k miles on them, but I never have to worry about going over anything in my LT tires.

Two years in a row now, on opening day of hunting season, I have punched a hole through the tread of the original P-rated tires of my 2011 1500. The logging roads I travel on have been graded with blasted granite rock that tends to have sharp corners.

Rather than purchace another of the same tire, I had the tire store install Goodyear Wrangler Adventure LT tires that have Kevlar belts. They are LR-E 10 ply rated and have the snowflake mark that is required here on the mountain roads in the winter. With the promotions that Goodyear is running right now and the trade in they gave me on the remaining good 3 tires, the total bill including installation and taxes was less than $800.

They originally aired them up to 35psi but it was too soft. Goodyear recomended 55 but it rode too hard. I'm now running at 50psi and it seems to be just right.

One question I have. Can the TPMS system be reset so that the warning comes on at a higher pressure?

Yes I think you can.

I had similar experiences with my P rated tires. Once I was driving along and PFFTFTT, almost a half inch gash, tire was empty in no time. Needless to say eventually another rock got into the hole and tore through the patch.

There is a tire that is rated "XL" it's between a "P" rated and a "LT" rated tire. They are available from many tire manufacturers-

IMHO there is no reason to buy an LT tire on a truck that isn't going to see loads or towing of any kind.

I run a Goodyear in an XL. Rated at 2892 lbs per tire for load

I'm currently running a P rated Michelin Latitude Tour but it's mainly for on road use; highway/street. It's comfortable, lighter, and has not given me any problems whatsoever.

But I would not recommend it if you're not on road 90% of the time,

And it has handled heavy loads just fine when needed as well (less than a handful of times).

It really depends on what you need from the tire and your truck.
