Performance Tuning

Well after months of reading on the internet and talking to many people about Tuners I felt that I would like to have one for my 2014 Silverado! The main thing I was looking for was to turn off the DOD/AFM which is very annoying with these new trucks if you have installed an aftermarket muffler because of drone.Everybody was telling me that this fellow called Lew was the God of tuning GM vehicles and I should hunt him up,I did and it was the best move that I have made from saving me some bucks on a package deal tuner,Walking me through the steps to tuning and loading files,To making my truck run smoother and stronger!(His website below)

Vehicle--2014 Chevy Silverado 5.3
Tuner--DiabloSport inTune Touch Screen Tuner
1.Canned tunes--Was stronger than stock and looked to get about .5 mpg better fuel mileage
2.Lew's custom tune--Stronger than canned tunes and pulled all through the gears even,Shifting was smoother and even rpm range between gears, truck seemed to start faster and just sounded better!Fuel mileage looks to be 1.5 to 2 mph better after Lew's tune.

**NOTE**-If you own a tuner or thinking about getting a tuner you should get with Lew and get the most out of your tuner. He really made it easy and great turn around with his work and customer service!Besides,He has some really neat stuff at his online store icon_e_biggrin.gif

I will second that. I also went with the Intune and a custom tune with Lew and have been very happy. It has made a very noticeable difference in my 09 1500 GMC with the 6.0l. I work out of town every week so I drive the exact same route every week, to and from work and to the seasonal camper every weekend. At idle my truck always had a little roughness in it, not bad but I could tell it was there and after his tune it's perfectly smooth. My mileage only went up by .07 mpg according to DIC but when hand calculating it was 1.1 mpg. That will help pay for itself very quickly with the number of miles I put on every year. The proof to me of the power gains were on the drive to the camper. I made 9 trips before the tune and 8 after so it's a compareable test. There were 3 hills that my truck used to have to downshift to maintain speed when the cruise was on but after Lew's tune it didn't need to downshift and didn't sound like it even was working hard, just sounded like i was cruising on flat ground. I know most people only believe hard numbers but that was enough proof for me. What also really impressed me is I could only email files on weekends because of work but he always replied within hours with a new tune, even on Sunday mornings!

I would recommend him to anyone.

Contact BlackBearPerformance. Maybe they have done tunes for the new 2014's now. Can't go wrong.

Camron, he got a tune already. He used the intune from Diablo and had it custom done. He was using an anecdote to express joy and praise for Lew

Woops, lol. Guess I miss read. Lew, what kind of gains are you seeing and what exactly are you able to configure?

dunno for sure on gains for the 2014's, haven't had anyone do a before and after dyno pull, heh...

but with all others, As far as gains go... absolute hp/tq gains are hard to predict... every vehicle is different... even if they're the same and have similar mods... location/weather, fuel used, elevation/altitude, etc etc all play a role... the same holds true for mileage gains - those variables, plus driving habits/style, how much highway vs city driving, etc all make a difference.... you could gain no mpg increase, or you could gain up to about 3 mpg increase... tough to say due to the variables in play... so there is no guarantee of any specific amount of hp/tq or mileage gains...

but I CAN tell you that you will definitely have a very noticeable performance difference/gain over and above the canned preset diablo tunes...
I have gained people anywhere from 12-39hp, and 10-23lb. ft. torque...and 0 to 2 mpg... again, obviously mods, fuel used, etc all played a role in who gained what...
can adjust shift points, shift pressure/firmness, how quick it shifts, torque management, disable dod/afm, speed limiter, remove throttle/WOT delays, fans, throttle/response settings, part-throttle and WOT fueling/timing, knock retard, etc etc. / plus more...

Wow these are ridiculously expensive! At this price I think I would just get Hp tuners.

If that's a canned tune you're wasting money. Doing one where someone like the guy above or Blackbear is the best option by a long shot.

Hp tuners is a tuning suite like efi live... I agreed with Crooks and just do my own thing.

My bad. I thought it was just another of the generic programmers.

    • I was around and remember that era very well, so I'm calling b/s on that statement. If they were that bad no police department or taxi company would've bought a single one ... but they were used in both services (and fire) for DECADES. They were bulletproof and proven. Even the early 21st century ones weren't too bad! The early models were legendary.   Mine is proof, but people like atlas are blinded by agenda and refuse to believe facts right before their very eyes.   Even decades after they were built, a new generation started driving them, posting all their builds and shenanigans on Grandmarq.net and Crownvic.net. The failures would show up then, since they all were deep past 100k-150k miles by that point, and younger drivers tend to be a little aggressive, especially with vehicles than can lay a one-tire fire for as long as you hold your foot in it. They've more than proven themselves over the decades.   The only thing that'll really take them out is road salt. The bodies and sheet metal were garbage. A victim of the cheapout FoMoCo and GM have been partaking in before then, and since.   Today it's the stuff that counts - the undercarriage that rots away first!    GMs Caprice was no slouch either. Reliable as a stone ax - the opposite of what they build now.
    • Let me know how your vehicles do in 10 years. You don't know ******, kid. 😂    There's a reason that Panther platform was used as police, fire, and taxi service for DECADES ... long before you were born, apparently.
    • If your connector also has a big lever to get the connector on and off, you don't want to force the lever either way, as it becomes a bigger problem if you bust the lever or the mechanism it works.
    • It's just useful to disconnect the battery to prevent odd shorting out when unplugging/plugging stuff together.  I also  touch the two cable ends together (after disonnecting) to drain the small amount of stored battery energy in various modules.   I believe the main system where you need to be more concerned with, so you need to do the above and then wait some time, iss when you are working on the air bag system, to prevent inadvertent firing of the air bags.   The in-cab switches are just that, plain switches, it's generally not a problem to swap them in/out.  For my '12, I'll get an error message on the dash if I power up the truck w them unplugged, but that's it (power up= turn the ignition on).   The ITBC located above the spare tire is a computer that manages the trailer brake system.  That is probably more important to have the battery disconnected.  It does have to be programmed to the truck, either before or after it's installed, for it to work.  For my '12, I had a very hard time reinstalling the main connector to it (IDK if yours is the same or not), it turned out the silicon seal was jamming up, preventing it from going on all the way.  I finally got it fully installed by lubing the seal with a bit of dielectric grease, then it slid on and latched in place easily.
    • JR ! I just got the truck back from the Dealership today . The technician did a cold remote start on the truck this morning and it made the noise . It was determined that it was a starter issue and replaced it under warranty . Of course   it did not make the sound after a new starter was put in because the truck was not cold . We will we see what happens tomorrow morning when I start the truck cold  . Keep tuned !   Oh I found a video on YouTube of a cold start and it did the same thing your truck and mine do , I will see if I can find it and post it up
