Are the 2014 AFM system different from previous silverado models

Hi,

New to the forum and I'm looking to buy my first truck. Test drove the 14 silverado and love the look of the truck. DI, electric steering, and fuel economy were some of the factors that led me to look at the silverado. AFM reliability is what is concerning me. Has GM fixed the problem? How is it different if they did.

I've talked to many people that own silverados and say the truck is bulletproof and that it is a great truck. None have went past 100k yet so I don't want to judge reliablity just from a few people.

I'm spoiled, me and my family members have been driving hondas and none of our vehicles had any major issues up to 130k. Only oil, fluid, brakes, and tire changes. My wife's Honda Odyssey had the first VCM honda produced which is similar to AFM. I traded it in because we started having 1 to 2 quart oil consumption. It still ran perfect when I traded it in, but I was scared that it wasn't normal to be burning oil like that at 70k miles. After that experience, I'm weary about any kind of AFM system. What are ya'll thoughts?

The new 4.3L, 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 Motors are 100% redesigned over the previous generation Vortec motors. The only thing they have in common are the displacement.

The new motors all have AFM, direct injection, variable valve timing and flex fuel capabiltity (prolly more specs, but those are the main ones.)

The AFM has been redesigned for the new trucks. And I can tell you it is seamless switching from V4/V8 mode. I dont have very many miles on my truck, (1600). But there are a handful of guys with a couple thousand trouble free miles on here, that Im sure will chime in.

I have 5300+ on ODO no problems, but I will getting it tuned soon and disabling AFM.

I like the truck when I test drove it. Was really excited about it until I read many forum threads about 2007 and up AFM engines. Guess I'm glad in a way that the motors are redesigned if I decide to get this truck. There is so much to like about it.

I had AFM on my 08 5.3 and never noticed it at all never an issue in 60 k.My new 14 is similar if I didn't see the did saying V4 mode I would never new it existed.I remember guys back then and now beefing about.Too me its a non issue saves fuel, lots of nit picking whiners on forums.

I turned mine off around 500 miles. It sucks on these new trucks also with the delayed throttle and the drone if you are running a aftermarket exhaust. It performs like a different truck with the AFM disabled!

The 2 big complaint about the AFM were oil burning-----which sucks my 6.0 but hopefully they

have that fixed.

The other complaint never made any sense---they could feel it go in and out of v4 mode but most

of the same guys wanted the 6 speed and now want the 8 speed tranny's. They must not feel it

shift all the time???

i rented a 2014 tahoe lt on vacation and drove it over 1600 miles, The Tahoe had the 5.3 engine and I never felt anything major between v4 and v8 mode. I did notice in the mountains it didnt seem to hold 4 or 5th gear very well or the grade of the road was steep enough that it needed to down shift to maintain a constant speed.

2014 tahoes will still be using the previous generation vortec motor, not the new ecotec3. But even still that afm system was revised several times since 2007 when it was introduced on 5.3 engines. I don't think the tahoes and suburbans will get the newer motors until 2015.
