Hey everybody,

I just got a new to me 04 Silverado 1500 and I'm wanting to eek a little more mpg out of it. What have you all done and how much has it helped? Any advice is appreciated!

Also, I've got the 5.3 ext cab with standard bed if it makes a difference.

I have squeezed around 22 mpg on a trip with my '13 5.3 4x4. I just maintained a steady speed, and treat the accelerator pedal like it has an egg on it. Best avg. has been 17.7.

Well before the supercharger, and still with active AFM, my best was 23.2 mpg on a 400+ mile trip with the cruise control set 5 mph above the posted speed limit. At the time I had the factory 20's with 3.73 gears. Wish I still got that, now if I get 12 mpgs I'm happy!

No mods of any kind? Cap/tonneau? Ecu work? 22 is pretty good! Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

It's DiabloSport tuned, Airaid MIT/K&N filter in factory box, 2" level. No tonneau yet, but very soon. The mileage should go up slightly with it. It is far more powerful and fun to drive after my couple of mods.

My 2006 can pull down 18. The electric fans are supposed to help. I have a Magnaflow muffler and a bedcover. I think those are good for maybe a quarter of an mpg. My bumper and tires didn't affect it.

IMO the best thing you can do is keep it running like a top. Spark plugs, clean oil, clean air filter, alignment, etc.

Also keeping the proper air pressure in your tires will help considerably. That and having lighter tires, some tires weigh quite a bit more than others so if you're not off roading, I'd stay away from most AT tires.

Most of my driving are runs of about 25 kms per day, 1/3rd of which takes the truck time to warm up, so my average is about 16.5 MPG after 19,500 kms of driving - the best mileage I can squeek out on my 60-70 kms round trips to the city and back run about 21 MPG. If I'm grandpa on the pedal on longer trips with no extra weight, I can get 24 MPG... but that's no fun.

I got 21 on the HWY with my truck Bone Stock and the Factory Goodyears..... same run with the 2" level and BFG Load Range E all terrain Ko's and it's at 18

I pull 18-18.5 in the 125 mile highway drive to class driving 75-80 on cruise. All season tires in 275/55R20

Since my drive is typically city (red light, stop/go) I usually only get about 14mpg with gas and 12-13 with e85. My driving habits are more aggressive than grandpa or I can get a little better. Now once I'm out on the highway I get high teens on gas (~70mph) and ~20mpg (55-60mph). The best I've gotten on e85 is ~16mpg no matter the speed. My truck is all stock except a level kit and a K&N filter (of which neither affected mpg's). So as stated before, proper maintenance and you'll see long, happy miles out of your vehicle.

Oh, if I hold at 55 I can pull 21, but what fun is that when I have all this power

    • Because that is IDIOTIC, much like this question. They've already been forced to do it by past administrations - why would you roll that back when it's a GOOD thing?  WHO IS ARGUING FOR LOWER MILEAGE???? 😂  NOBODY IS!!   I'm certainly not! What I want is RELIABLE vehicles again that are worth the price paid!    I don't get your logic here ...   In 2003 I paid $2,200 for our '86 Grand Marquis. It's STILL running and I've never been inside the engine, aside for the timing cover since it was leaking, so I threw a new timing set in since that makes sense. Transmission is ORIGINAL. Electric pump in the gas tank is ORIGINAL. Rear end is ORIGINAL. I'd have to hit my head REAL hard to want to pay $60k or more for a car that still can't come close to the comfort, seating and storage space, or reliability of this one. Nothing is even in the ball park! Hundreds of thousands of brands and models have been built and sent to the crusher while this one keeps on going!   https://postimg.cc/Z9XRrCSg   I've got a whole fleet of cars, motorcycles, and a truck close to this age for summer and winter. No one could pay me enough to buy anything built this century. I have zero use for any it.
    • Since I'm the one who has to fix them when they break, I'll take vehicles over 30 years old all day, EVERY day, over ANY modern crap. Have you attempted any repairs on anything built after 2006? It's a friggin nightmare, and gets worse the newer the model year.    If I had the will or desire, I can make any car of any age outside of a Model T (I don't have THAT much will ...) just as powerful, comfortable, and have all the tech the new stuff does, and get pretty close in mileage, too. I prefer SIMPLICITY. The less the vehicle has, the less to fix WHEN it breaks, not IF.   I'm glad you snot-nosed punks don't like them. More for us, plus that keeps the prices from climbing more than they already have.👍
    • Bringing this thread back on topic. I just noticed the incredible lack of bright chrome across the entire new lineup. Even the Denali has tinted the brightwork in the grille and has none elsewhere. None of them have chrome bumpers. As far as I can tell there aren't even chrome mirror caps. I'm curious if this also happens out back? Are there no chrome rear bumpers either? This is quite the departure for GMC.
