We as Silverado owners need to know this!! in 10/2013 I brought a 2014 Silverado with the 5.3L. I have owned this engine before. my vin # is 3gcukrec7eg220189. I know posting this is unusual but very important to all. on 1/16/2014 I was driving at 45mph on a 2 lane road without any shoulder when the info center went off, no oil pressure, shut off now!! I drove about 100 feet into a driveway and shut the thing off. after the tow to the dealer and getting a rental went home. on 1/20/2014 dealer called and I went to see for my self, the oil pump literally had a hole in it. a piece from the center [ a 3 piece pump ] had blown out about the size of dime. I requested a new engine to be installed. I thought GM would like to find out why this happened, wrong!!! after 3 weeks and several phone calls my truck was returned with only a new oil pump. I was told by GM, not the dealer, it is holding oil pressure to spec. drive it. we stand behind our vehicles and customers, I do not agree and hopefully you won't either. I am a ASE MASTER TEC with 46yrs experience. I have rebuilt many engines and installed many target masters and others. there is no way to get all the metal out of this engine unless taken apart and hot tanked. in time it will come apart and I hope not on a interstate at that speed, I'll never get off the road in time. how dangerous can that be ? this being said GM would not tell me why it came apart or any others have. look, something is to blame, personally I think a bad casting, so how many pumps are in the same run? not likely to have a recall, cost too much!! someone [not to be named said, should have run it till it locked up] GM can down load the computer and blame me for driving too long after the warning. am I the only one? I really hope so, I do not want anyone to go through this, but I doubt it. good luck, this was not my first new GM but it will be my last.

This is a new engine design was my understanding. Is the oil pumps the same as past years??

With that being said I would have requested a new engine. Did you see the failed pump??

this has a 'vain oil pump' not the old style gear pump. yes I did see the pump and I did request a new engine,

Defective casting and inadequate part quality control is the only answer here.

I agree, no way of knowing if anymore castings are bad that's the main reason for posting my vin# if anybody haze one close it may have a oil pump from the same batch but cant be sure

no parts on the new 5.3 carried over from the old 5.3. This is a clean sheet designed motor, I think they said only 2 bolts share the same part number as the previous motor.

I would bet it never comes apart. That being said I wouldve been upste too and I hate it happened!! If you shut engine down as you said then it cant possibly be hurt. They run these things in testing with low oil and with no oil. They know whats hurt and whats possibly not. Id be curious to see a pic of a magnetic oil plug that has been ran in your truck to see just how much metal is in it. You could always do an oil sample too. I just dont think it will be hurt. However I hear and understand why your mad but why not see if truck tears up before disowning a great product. Just my thinkn. Sorry to hear!!!!!!

it is a good product as all of them are when running good. I hope it stays together too, but after 46 yrs. of working on them I doubt it. it is back at the dealer for noise at cold start now. we will see what's next

ps. I am not mad just very disappointed in the way it is being treated by GM.

got my 2nd oil change and requested a oil sample, sent it to the lab and received notice of high excessive wear, high copper, iron, and others. also low viscosity of dealer installed oil. I am going to the dealer today and give them a copy. lets see what's next from Chevy!
