No Hoax here either. ChristianK22, mine went in for 8 Afm lifter replacement and after 3 days of having it back its knocking again so its back in the shop again. I know its hard to believe but with 0-1 qt of oil i didnt have 1 warning come up on the DIC. If i hadnt heard the knocking sound i would have never known i was out of oil. And of course i check the oil periodically, but we all get busy and overtime trust all the technology and controls put in place to make our lives easier. I mean how many times have you been 3-5k miles on an oil change and think, i better check my oil level it could be completly gone. And u definetly dont think that at 700-1k miles.

ChristianK22, since u didnt have the dealership pick up the truck on the side of the road with no oil showing i wouldnt bring it up unless you go thru the oil again on this next oil. Neither u or the dealership can prove what happened unfortunately. Hopefully, it was similar to Ron White's story and the oil guy at the dealership didnt show up to training on oil change day, so he forgot to fill it back up. Good luck with everything and hopefully u wont run into any problems in the near future. Just keep an eye on your oil every 1k miles or have the dealership start an oil consumption test for records. And if u hear the ticking/knocking sound in the engine bay, then u might be looking at lifter issues and alot of these trucks have it and seems to go along with the oil consumption.

Good luck

Thanks for the response I hope it's not the lifters, but hey if I'm gonna be going in that far to the engine to change those might as well do some extras while I'm in there :) I hope everything gets figured out with your truck as well.

I remember once when I changed my oil, part of the old rubber gasket stuck to the engine. This caused the new filter to not seal properly, and I pumped out all 6 quarts with 2 miles. I heard the same noises and started to panic. LUCKILY, I was able to get it fixed before any major damage happenned. 155,000 miles since that has happened, and still running strong.

Perhaps you can send in an oil sample (anyone recommend a place?) and have it analyzed to see if there are any traces of metal or anything "not oil" going on in there.

Best of luck, hopefully it was just a fluke....

That's a good idea, never even thought about that. I'll look up blackstone labs, I wonder if even the chemistry department at my university I go to could do a test

i have an idea ,,,,

how about changing the oil/filter again YOURSELF and driving 1000 miles and recheck the oil level ,,,

that way you know WTF is goin on ,,,,,and have proof that they forked up your truck ,,or almost did ,,,

make sense ?

Definitely makes sense, I'll change it next time I can get home. At the latest that'll be March 14. I'm going to check it every 250 miles or so until then and see if there are any changes in the oil level.

What do you think the problem is then? Is my truck going through oil like gas or what??

I don't know what the problem is.

I don't mean to be rude or to offense you. It just doesn't make sense.

And yes. If your engine is the 5.3L with AFM it could go trough oil like nothing.

I can't believe no one checks their oil.

I checked all the fluids after I bought my '07 Sierra back then.

After two weeks or so the "engine oil low" message popped up.

I did not check the oil in between because I didn't expect a modern engine to go through oil like a tug boat.

Now I check every time I fill up gas. Of course I supposed to do it anyway but come on...it's 2014.

Sorry about that, always so hard to judge how people are saying things on a message board. The truck has the 6.2 so no AFM, I wonder if it could still be a lifter issue though..
