bartonjude Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I have a 2007 Classic Crew Cab with the 5.3L and 123,000 miles. I drive 16,000 miles annually and take two trips annually over 800 miles each. I am considering a fuel pump replacement even though I have not had any issues with the fuel system. What do you guys think?
white1500 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 It wouldnt hurt, but why have you chosen the fuel pump in particular as the precautionary replacement? It seems like an arbitrary part to replace.
Bob D Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 ....why have you chosen the fuel pump in particular as the precautionary replacement? It seems like an arbitrary part to replace. Unlike alternators and the like, it's not a replacement most would attempt on the side of the road. I, too, am curious as to typical life expectancy of fuel pumps (though I suspect if a poll were conducted, mileage @ point of failure would vary greatly). I'd rather replace myself @ home (as a preemptive tactic) as opposed to out of town where it may cost >$2,000 (not including lost time). I think that OP's 123K mi.s. a bit premature, though.
navinke Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I got around 165000kms out of my original fuel pump
Bob D Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I got around 165000kms out of my original fuel pump 103K mi.s. That's not very reassuring....
navinke Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 No it wasn't It's a 2002 that I've owned since new The only time it ever let me down though
kstruckcountry Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Is it making noise? Have you checked the fuel pressure?
white1500 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Mine has let me down twice without any prior warning. Once it was a day after a small road trip back near my house and the second time it was at home. But it is true that its best done at home instead of on the side of the road or in a random shop.
efritz Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 In my experience, a fuel pump's reliability starts to tank after 5 years in service or 125,000 miles of runtime. I personally change them in my fleet of vehicles every 100,000 miles as by then my pressures are a bit lower. I have never, never had a pump failure that left me walking. It's a good idea to change them before 150k at the minimum. DO NOT get a cheap pump. it will last 6 months!!! Either OE, Carter, or Bosch. If you spend less than 200 bucks it's a POS. Do your fuel filter too. Good luck!
bartonjude Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Good points. I hear it whistle very infrequently and have not checked pressure. Since I've already done other pm items at 100k, I think I'll change it.
Bad Bowtie2 Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 No servicable fuel filters after the 2004 M/Y.
Bob D Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Well I suspect my fuel pump just went (@ 147k mi.s). I am 400 mi.s from home. It happened Christmas morning. Arghhh!
Mckenzie Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 my truck is at 232K miles and is on it's third fuel pump i believe. Last time it started making noise so we replaced it. It definitely would not be a bad idea if you have the extra money to swing it. But i say drive it till you got a reason to replace it. My fuel gauge is bouncing all over the place as of late, so it may be getting time for fuel pump number 4 haha
Daryl LBZ Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I don't know for sure how many miles mine had on it because I bought it with 232,000 miles, but judging by the corrosion on it I'm not so sure it wasn't the original pump. I just have a hard time believing it could last that long...
Clay_Lucas Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 my pump just went out at just over 200,000 miles. (2000 1500) I found a off brand pump for about $50 @ am-autoparts with free shipping and a 10 year warranty. I know getting cheap/aftermarket parts isn't a good idea, but the Delco part only had either a 30 day or 1 year warranty.
