Tell me what you think

Okay seems like in todays world, and yes I'm young and thus offer little review to the past, but it seems everyone is buying vehicles and trading them in about every 2 years and with minimal miles.  My dad and our family has always been into buying a truck and wearing them out in 10 years with well over 200K miles on them.  #### we have a 91 K1500 with 315,000 miles original motor.  My first truck was a 77 K30 with 287,000 miles.  It just seems to me that people aren't keeping their vehicles and wearing them out them as much anymore.  This could be do to the increasingly better life styles and new economic attributes.  Or just the new society...anyways I just figured I'd shoot it out there.  Sound off and tell me what you think.

Sounds right.  Dad is becoming a rare customer at the dealer when he's traded in his last car at 160k, and now the hand-me-down wagon from mom at 127k.

Funny isn't it. We buy trucks that are advertized to go 250,000 miles or more. Then trade them when they are barely broken in at 95,000 miles.

I intend to keep my truck at least 5 years and by then it should have about 150,000 miles on it. I'll go about six months with no payment and won't be able to take it any more. I'll be sucked into the show room and will sign up for another five years just for the privilige of driving one of the coolest trucks ever made.

See what you 've got to look foreward to.

Traded in my 95 burb with over 150k on it in July of 2001 for my current truck.  The burb was on it's 3rd tranny, 2nd pair of cat converters, and had a whole new freon system installed for the A/C.  I would've kept it longer but dad said he didn't want me taking it to college.  I don't think anyone in my family has traded in a car that has had under 100k on it.  I do plan to have my truck well over 150k, maybe well over 200k if it lasts!

My EX husband killed my first truck otherwise I'd probably still be driveing it. It was a 1988 Toyota truck.(No Chevy for me it was my first car I was young and stupid)  It had about 160K on it. It ran like a champ. I had just bought a new air conditioner and brakes when BAM!! it got totaled. Boy was I pissed! I will drive my X-Terra until it dies. I like the idea of no payments. Tim can't stand it but I can.

I had my 93 Sonoma new from 93 till Nov of 2001 and it had 128K on it. The 0 % interest is what got me in the dealer. Now that I only owe less than two years and the truck will be paid for I plan on keeping but still making the payment for a long time. The next truck I plan on getting will probably be a small home loan with the prices going up like they do every year. You couldn't have told me that I would be paying 30+K for a truck three years ago but I did. :flag:  So that new one will probably run that much more. Not to mention got to save for the kids college.

My parent always kept vehicles for at least 6 yrs and over 100K each, but since they retired that has gone by and new ones every two to three years has become the norm. Heck if our 79 Rabbit Diesel didn't throw a rod on me at 140K I would still be driving it today. I do miss that great 45+ mpg. :thumb:

My wife has an 02 Venture that is only 10 months old and close to 30k so it will be getting traded sooner than my truck.  I guess it is our way of helping out the economy.

I have 98,000 on my truck and do not plan on trading it in at all. I'll drive the wheels off of it.

My wife's "90 Cutlass has 130k on it and we still own it even though I did buy her a new Tahoe. The Tahoe will be run into the ground as well.

I don't see the sense of trading in after a few years. These vehicles are expensive!

Yeah, it seems to me that more people are trading earlier, and I have to admit I've been bitten of late w/ the same bug that timk mentioned.

Historically, I've kept vehicles till they wear out, especially my '88 Calais Quad4.  Ran that poor car to its grave - it was seriously cancer ridden, but w/ 177K miles on it, still ran like a top (relatively speaking).  My '91 Lumina 3.1 has 236K honest-to-God miles on it and still runs great.

My plan is to keep the '03 for as many years as I can after pay-off.

Well for me.  I am 23 I have had my licencse for 6 years now and I have had 6 cars.  I have driven them all into the ground.  Except for the last 2.  Gave my old one to my bro and I bought the new one.  I have 2 years of payments left on it and I am selling it to get a used Tahoe.  I can't belive I am going backwards but I am getting a much better improvement.  Neon to Tahoe.  It works for me.  I will drive the Tahoe to the ground.  My dad has a 92 1500 Sierra 2wd V6 with 210,000 miles on it.  1 motor rebuild and the trans is on it's way.  Not bad at all.  I expect to have the tahoe for a long time.

It's a combonation of the things you posted originally but also STATUS is an ever more important factor.  Also, with all these 0%, $3,000 cash back/no money down deals are hard to pass up.

Drove my 91 S-10 up to 250,000 miles on er. Then when I got my Xtreme late last year in November I sold my 91 to my step cousin  (Wish I still had it) Plan on keeping this truck I have now a loooonnnnggg time. I have a 5 year plan to make it one #### of a sleeper. V8 Engine swap, rear independent suspensin, 6 speed tranny, ooooh baby hehehe.

I generally keep vehicle a long time. My dad does too. He has a 76 F-150 Ranger 4x4 with over 700,000 on it

It really depends on the vehicle.  I usually keep them until I get tired of them.  As long as I can afford to, I don't care to keep any vehicle much over 100k miles.
