Emergency brake pedal

This '03 Silverado is such an amazing truck for me.  But, that danged emergency brake pedal snags my pants cuff and I have hit my shin with it more than once.

 

I wish there were a way of adjusting it so it is not so high up.  Part of me is ready to cut off a couple of inches, if I could figure a way of doing it so that it wouldn't look bad.

 

I don't understand why that pedal has to be in such a position, literally sticking in the way of entry/exit.

Well, yeah.  If I adjust the seat back a bit, I don't have the problem.  But then my arms don't fit to the steering wheel comfortably and my feet are not right with the pedals.

 

Yeah, that hacksaw sounds like a potential solution.  Gonna have to think about that.  :cool:

Is your 03 an LT? One of the driver functions on our 03 Denali there is an "easy exit system" (should also be on the Silverados, LT trim level, as long as you have memory seats).

 

The easy exit system essentially moves the entire seat backwards when the key is removed from the ignition. I personally don't think the feature is helpful on exit but it can be when entering. I have the Denali programmed so that it leaves the seat in the exit position until I start the vehicle. Once it starts, it moves everything (radio stations, mirrors, seats, etc.) back to they way I like it, based upon the driver preferences associated with the Driver #1 and #2  keys.

 

If you happen to have this feature, I think it would work for your needs.

I did it like every time I got in my 2000 for the first couple of months.  It irritated the he** out of me, too.  After a while, though, I subconsciously got used to it or something because I rarely have a problem with it now.  

 

Just give it a couple of months and you will probably get used to it.  

 

Just out of curiousity, what vehicle did you have before your new truck?

Unfortunately, I didn't get the memory function.  Wish I had that though, but that is another option the salesdroid didn't tell me about.  :cool:

 

I'm fairly well used to the thing now, but I think it could do a number to the left leg if even a minor wreck occured.  Regarding my previous vehicle, it was a Pontiac GrandAm.  Nice little car.  I enjoyed it, but it hated me for treating it like a truck.  The back seat folded down and I was always cramming stuff in the truck all the way to the driver's seat via the truck access-way.

 

Ten years ago, I had an extended cab GMC, but I don't recall griping about the emergency brake back then.  Perhaps I'm more discriminatory now.

The reason I asked what you had previously was because I was curious about whether we had the same vehicles before.  I was thinking maybe we were used to getting into a certain vehicle a certain way because it seems that only some people have problems with the e-brake.  Apparently that is not the case, though, because my previous vehicle was a 1995 K1500.

I guess this particular design has been around a while.  Really amazing since this pedal is in such a prominant position and its function is not particularly major.

 

I earlier raised the issue about its possibly causing some injury during a wreck...  A long time ago, I kept bruising my left knee on a vehicle (can't recall which one).  Never could figure it out.

 

Finally, I isolated the problem.  As I hit bumps or pot holes, my knee would bump against the window crank.  No telling what kind of injury could have occured if a wreck had occured, causing the knee to whap! against the window crank.

 

Well, I have power windows in this 03 and don't have to worry about that.

I know it sounds like simple question, but why not set the brake when you exit?  That would solve the problem of hurting yourself on it.

 

I set mine every time I get out of the truck.  I might be that I've alway driving MT's until now.

Yeah, that certainly would solve the entry/exit issue, and not snagging the pants cuff.

I was thinking to myself, "I've never had that problem." So I went out and looked at the Tahoe, nope, no problem getting in and out.

dstien hit it for me. I always set the brake.

I originally read the first post and wondered why I don't remember the brake sticking out, then it dawned on me that I set mine everytime I get out so that the headlights don't come on with the remote car starter. I use the timer feature in the winter so my truck warms up 10 minutes before I get out of work. Worth its weight in gasoline when the high temp for the day is below 0 degrees F!!!

    • Glad it worked for you. I tried that 1st, about 2 years ago. Didn't help. I also tried doing a hard reset (disconnecting battery for minimum of 30 minutes). Worked a couple times, but after one summer of doing it over and over, that no longer worked.  I was fairly confident it was either the compressor or a failed actuator, but I just couldn't identify which one. Had to research which actuators do what and which last numbers are associated with each.

    • More is cylinder deactivation. Kia-Hyundai Ive had 4. The warranty is the same 10 years 100K miles. My grandson drives the first one 05 Elantra GT. My wife drives the second one 2011 Genesis. The Genesis still performs as new and looks great. The Elantra looks rough. He’s not kind to it. The third was a Genesis coup. The fourth was a Santa Fe. Those were my daily drivers. I don’t keep them long. Kia is the same as Hyundai with the same warranty. I looked at the K-4 today. Too small, otherwise pretty good buy. Most of Hyundai and Kia’s have a performance upgrade.

    • Great question. Answer....depends. One the volume of the crankcase, the driver that will actually be using the vehicle and the amount it uses plus the distance expected for that next trip. Couple of for instances:   Wife is going to drive Dizzy to Moline and back plus a bit around town so say 500 miles on the day. I know from years with that SUV that around town and local rural it uses about a quart in 1250 miles. But on the Interstate and her at the wheel without her anchor nagging her she'll push it and it will drop a quart in about 800 miles. Hence, around town I wait to somewhere between a quarter down to a quart down. On her trip I'd top it if it was down a few ounces and hope for the best.    Have I overfilled one? You mean by adding before it needs a full quart I assume. No, not once after finding the true fill mark.  I know the dipsticks of everything I drive and add what it needs. I learn this by doing the first oil change a quart low. Run the motor for a few minutes. Let it sit over night. Check and mark. Then add half a cup at a time making note of the place on the stick. I add through the dipstick tube with a barbeque basting bottle. Give it a few minutes to drain down and check again.    A vehicle like Dizzy that uses this much oil will take a few quarts between 3K changes. I keep one in the vehicle with the bottle and a bag. (Mindful of it's fullness) Not a big deal and never makes a mess of it. There is no such thing as "multiple quarts' in my shop for any specific oil. There will be a maximum however of the number of different oils used over the fleet.     Dizzy holds a nominal 5 quarts. So the first fill was indeed over as it actually took 4.75. My vehicles are fit with Valvomax valves so I can meter an ounce on the drain if need be. Found her mark first crack at it. Never to be repeated.    Pepper uses none between changes so I don't keep a quart in that one. Straight up 6 quarts put her dead on the full line. Check it ever fuel stop. They will surprise you when they start using.    Raven holds 3 liters or 5.44 ounces over three quarts. I add 3 quarts and 6 ounces. That gives me 5 oil changes on my orphan quart.    Lawnmower holds about 3/5 of a quart. I don't over fill it to prevent an orphan. So yea, depends.
