Performance Exhaust installation on 2014 Sierra SLT 5.3L

So by installing a custom cat back exhaust, duals out behind the wheels only voids the warranty on my exhaust, not voiding any other warranties? Recalls engine running rough, tranny, etc. would still be covered under warranty right?

Called my local dealer just to ask, what if? They told me the only warranty you will void is the exhaust system. In other words you come in after you have changed the exhaust and you have a drone they will not cover you, obviously. Opening up the exhaust will not harm the engine, so I'm good to go! I think every dealer has a different take on it. If the dealer chooses to dump some info into a national database about your exhaust, find a different dealer they are being dicks.

The only warranty you would void is the exhaust. My God.

 

Stan, I hate to say this but that is not correct. You void the warranty, as the GM representative informed me, on the complete engine system because the exhaust is an integral part of that system. If the pressure valve or "flapper" or what ever you want to call it that regulates the V8-V4 system is changed, it will void the warranty if there is ever an issue. (unless the change was made by the GM dealership) The key word being EVER. There may never be an issue with any type of performance exhaust upgrade regardless of the manufactor. But you can bet your bottom line that if there is an issue and they can somehow equate it to the change, you will never win that battle. Just saying...

 

I think this forum was just for informational purposes. What somebody does with their $45K to $60K Chevy/GMC vehicle is entirely up to them. In my case, I am having the GMC dealership make the performance exhaust change and IF there is an issue, they can correct it. It appears to me that this new 2014 roll out of trucks is still in the evaluation mode and they are carefully monitoring changes that are not stock or factory part authorized. I could not imagine hiring an attorney to fight the massive law firm that GM retains to defend their actions and decisions. Like I said, just informing the masses of what I found out from a GM technician.

I have taken on big boys before and won. I did ask first, no problem on the exhaust. I did leave the flapper, if that matters I don't think so. If they said no on the exhaust I wouldn't have bought the truck. But do what you think best.

Under the Magnuson-Moss Act, a dealer must prove, not just vocalize, that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before it can deny warranty coverage. If the dealer cannot prove such a claim — or it proffers a questionable explanation — it is your legal right to demand compliance with the warranty. The Federal Trade Commission administers the Magnuson-Moss Act and monitors compliance with warranty law.

I could see the lawsuit now, a dealer saying you can use flomaster but no one else. All the other muffler co. getting together to sue. That's the same as saying you can Goodyear but not Firestone, they just wanted to sell you their exhaust. All the local dealers in my area send their trucks to the same bender I got mine done.

All dealers will tell you that, and they are all wrong! They can't void your warranty on anything except the exhaust and exhaust emissions- (catalytic converters). GM was already sued over that once before, you thing they'd learn their lesson. The problem lies with lazy as mechanics. I had a Silverado SS with supercharger and a lot of other stuff, that kept throwing codes- 6 different dealers said it was 6 different things related to supercharger. After pulling it off to swap it in, the service dept checked code and replaced a connector on the AC compressor system, which was the issue all a long. When I asked why they didn't know that before their answer was, well we just assumed it was the aftermarket stuff. Not the first or last time you'll hear that kind of stuff from dealer service depts. or should I say Stealerships No-Service Depts.

The flapper valve is there to make a better exhaust sound and add back pressure while in v4 mode. Any other words- useless. If it was that important why didn't they have it in '07-12? The flapper valve didn't show up until mid year 2013, for full launch on 2014 vehicles.

exactly and I would be making it well known to the owner of that dealership that you don't appreciate being threatened with lies from their employees.

Well, I just got a wake up call from the Service Manager at my local GMC dealership. I was in there having my first oil change yesterday and got into a discussion with him about switching out my stock exhaust for performance exhaust. He said with compete confidence and stern warning that my warranty would be voided. He said that his mechanics have been directed to advise him of any modifications to the exhaust on any 2014 GMC truck to include installation of performance exhaust. He advised that the design of the muffler system on the 2014's was special and that they can't even cross breed the mufflers from the three types of Sierra's. SLE, SLT or Denali's. In other words, you are not suppose to interchange any of the three GMC truck brands. Each is specialized in its own way.

 

His bottom line is that if modifications are detected, your vehicle will be flagged in the national database system and any future issues related to engine performance or even recalls will be voided.

 

I heard this same line from the other GMC dealership in town just to verify this guys position and was completely taken aback. He STRONGLY advised against any modification and warned me about the repercussions.

That's a bunch of BS about specific exhausts. I can see each engine having their own design but there is nothing different about the mechanical bits between an SLE, SLT, and Denali. I've run exhausts on every vehicle I've owned and never had them questioned when I had warranty work done. As others said they can't just flag a vehicle because of exhaust and even if it were suspected they'd have to prove it. Back when I first joined a member with a tune had an engine failure that GM attempted to blame on the tune but Blackbear was able to step up and make GM admit it was a defect with the engine and nothing to do with the tune. Borla makes good stuff so I'd have nothing against that but find a new shop or tell this guy to pound sand.
