Performance Exhaust installation on 2014 Sierra SLT 5.3L

Well, I just got a wake up call from the Service Manager at my local GMC dealership. I was in there having my first oil change yesterday and got into a discussion with him about switching out my stock exhaust for performance exhaust. He said with compete confidence and stern warning that my warranty would be voided. He said that his mechanics have been directed to advise him of any modifications to the exhaust on any 2014 GMC truck to include installation of performance exhaust. He advised that the design of the muffler system on the 2014's was special and that they can't even cross breed the mufflers from the three types of Sierra's. SLE, SLT or Denali's. In other words, you are not suppose to interchange any of the three GMC truck brands. Each is specialized in its own way.

His bottom line is that if modifications are detected, your vehicle will be flagged in the national database system and any future issues related to engine performance or even recalls will be voided.

I heard this same line from the other GMC dealership in town just to verify this guys position and was completely taken aback. He STRONGLY advised against any modification and warned me about the repercussions.

What the heck is with that?

This doesn't make any sense because the GM Web Site list 5 different exhaust systems with GM part #'s. Granted they are Borla exhaust cat back. They also list 5 different exhaust tips. That being the case, I wonder what that Service Manager would say about it. Have you pointed this out to him? I think that you better find a new dealership.

SY2455, can you copy and paste the GM web site that you quoted above for the exhaust systems? Thanks for your input.

This is the official GM web site link. I also emailed the GMC corporate flunkies to get the real deal. I will let you know what I find out. Sounds like BS to me.

The 1 thing that I find interesting about the GMC site is this. They do not list a GM part # for the 6.2 engine. Mark, thinking about this more and the Service Manager was most likely talking about reprograming the ECM by doing a custom tune.

You may be right....waiting for the GMC technicians to reply to my request for information. If they are going to openly advertise the BORLA exhaust and assign GM parts numbers to it, they cannot say that changes to the exhaust are not authorized. I also have a buddy in Atlanta that works for a chevy dealer looking into it. We will know in the next few days the answer.

I believe that someone here stated the borla systems for the Silverado/Sierra have the flapper valve built in. Not that this flapper valve could be the sole reason for any of this. GM themselves were welding the flapper valve open just so people could start their trucks.

I HAVE THE ANSWER. After much BS and foot dragging, I spoke to a representative with GM. He stated that BORLA had spent a lot of time developing and manufactoring an exhaust for both Chevy and GMC 2014 vehicles. The exhaust that BORLA developed passed all tests and met all standards that GM threw at them. GM decided to award BORLA an authorized parts deal that they gladly accepted. You can get the BORLA exhaust placed on your Chevy or GMC vehicle as long as it meets the specifications that GM has identified as official GM parts without any violation of the warranty or reprecussions. Some things you need to know......

You can get the same side catback exhaust with duals out of one pipe, (In other words, the exhaust will exit from the right side but not the left side) not behind both wheels, or you can get pipes that come out under the rear bumper in dual mode. (Again, two completely different pipes that exit from under the bumper. This decision was based on keeping the spare tire intact and not removing it) In other words, you are limited in your performance exhaust that BORLA is authorized by GM to be introduced to our trucks. NOW, you can contact BORLA directly in California and they will tell you, in complete confidence, that all of their variations of exhaust pipes meets the standards for our trucks. GM decided NOT to introduce all of their options for rear airflow, and I am not sure why. BORLA did a hell of a job with their research and their approvals from GM so I guess it is up to each of you what you decide to buy and place on the trucks you own.

Today, I pulled trigger on a dual rear exit below the rear bumper exhaust system from BORLA. As the GM representative said, this specific exhaust system is easily mounted and prefabricated for a perfect fit.

Thanks to all who had input and I hope this clarifies your questions about "AUTHORIZED" performance exhaust. I cannot speak for FLOWMASTER or others.

As a follow up, I would prefer to have the duel catback system that exits behind both rear wheels. BUT, because GM did not award this specific type of performance exhaust, I said the hell with it and bought the two duals under the bumper....
