2005 HD Mirror Mechanic

Have any of you taken the OE mirrors apart? I can adjust both mirror angles from the door switch, but that is all. I was driving yesterday and it started raining so without looking down I pressed where I though the window switch would be, but was too far forward and hit the mirror switch. My LH mirror started extending (WTF?) so I reversed it. Now it won't do anything (and never had up to this point), so am assuming a broken wire or bad ground? But, I can still hear the motor...

 

I haven't had the truck long enough to know what it has and what it doesn't have. Other than that I am loving life with it.

You will only know if you get a meter out and start checking around. My thoughts are more with the switch in the door panel..

But, I CAN hear the motor in the mirror cycle when I hit the swtich. I would swear I read somewhere that the mirror extend/retract runs in a track

If you can hear the motor then yes it is working (or trying to). Now whether its on a track or geared, I have no idea. Sorry. Seems the mirrors are "popped" into place but you will more than likely break it getting it out to look inside.. You may try to manually adjust the mirror all the way up or down and see if you can see anything happening inside the case.

 

Unfortunately, if you hit something and the mirror was broken off, you would be able to accept your losses and move on... Those power extended ones seemed like they were a PIA... Suggest power-heated manual extend after markets.... Maybe someone else will chime in with more knowledge on these mirrors.

They are 300 bucks each.. A tow truck driver pushed the electric mirrors in and broke one.. !!!
