Overhead Console

Does anyone with the long overhead console have a cubby hole, storage compartment, or whatever you want to call it in the front instead of the blank cover plate?

Does one even exist for the long overhead consoles?

Sorry I don't.

But I am curious, There does seem to be quite a bit of wasted space there.

I thought about cutting into mine, and putting a radar detector up there.  But hadn't thought about it in quite a while.

Have you looked inside to see if there is any room?

You got me thinking now. I might have to pull mine off and see.

Thanks a lot...Another thing to do.

Nope, I have the plate too. I think that unless you get an SUV with rear air you get a plate.

I don't think there is anything behind it. In fact, if I remember right, Tom's got his CD changer controls mounted up there.

Yes, I do.  But I may move the controls if there is a storage compartment available.

There is nothing behind there, I just wondered if there was a storage compartment that snapped in there like the factory cover plate does.

There seems to be only a storage pocket on the shorty overhead.  It looks like a completely different shape from the cover plate on the long console.

Hmmm. Maybe with a little minor fabrication, some finesse, and a BFH...It would fit.

A BFH can fix almost anything.

All the ones I saw on EBay where like we already have. I have not seen any with a storage compartment. It would be nice to have though.

Talk about timing!!   My son just bought a '01 1500HD and we were looking at doing the same thing.   First of all, how do you get that plate off?   We tried several ways, but was afraid we going to crack it.  I noticed it seems to have alot more "give" when pushing against it.  Surely it would not take much to make a nice cibby hole. ???

What do you guys put in your overhead console??  My shades are too big to fit in the sunglass holder, and I don't have my GDO mounted either (because my garage is not attatched to the house).  I like the console , but dont really use it for anything except the map lights.  Maybe I could fit a ham sandwich in the rear one. :(

The cover plate in question covers the area that is used for the rear heat controls on the SUV's.  My console came from a Tahoe that had the controls.  So I had to cut a piece of plastic to cover the opening.  I would really love to buy the cover plate if anyone has one or knows the part # so I can order one from GM.

The easiest way to remove the plate would be to remove the console.  There is one screw dead center towards the fron of the console near the windshield.  Loosen the screw (it doesn't come out all the way before the console is loose), and then slide the console forward to release the back tabs.  You should then be able to release the tabs from behind that hold the cover plate on.

I have a short console available if someone wants to trade for a cover plate or an entire long console in grey.  I may also consider buying a complete long console in grey outright if the price is reasonable.

What is the real use for the rear one?  I haven't found crap for a use for it.........

OH WAIT....... I can Hide my condums there  :(  :jester:
