2000 Silverado 2500 wont shift

A friend of mine recently passed away, and in an effort to help his wife out, Im thinking about offering to help her fix his old truck to get it ready to sell, or maybe even buying it myself. But, first I need some input. The truck is a 2000 model 2500 pickup with a manual transmission. The engine seems to run fine, but the transmission will not shift when the engine is running because the clutch pedal doesn't seem to be disengaging the clutch when depressed. The pedal feels spongy and will not build pressure, even after adding fresh fluid. My father-in-law thinks it may be a slave cylinder, but hes not sure.

What say you?

So, how difficult is it to remove the transmission without a lift or special tools. Basically what Ive got is 3 floor jacks, a bunch of jack stands, and some basic mechanics tools, including an impact and air ratchet. How heavy is that transmission anyway?

this job WILL bit you in the butt ,,,,its a heavy unit and awkward ,,,,,,and ya get to wrestle the t case out as well,,,,ya need a tranny jack ,,,,,

have fun ,you wont do it a second time ,,,you'll pay someone

it just seems as thou you have little to no experience ,,,,do what ya want

Well, yeah. Ive only installed one transmission before, and that was on an 86 Ford. It wasn't fun, I will tell you that. Its not that I want to do it myself, I just wanted to know if it was worth the savings to do it myself.

I have replaced just about any part you can think of on a GM 5.7 truck engine, and quite a bit of basic bolt-on mechanicing on 5.3s and 6.0s, but I really haven't done much transmission work short of replacing filter and fluid. I did convert my S10 column shift to a Blazer style floor shifter, but that's about the extent of my transmission experience.

I was just trying to gauge whether is was something that might be worth trying myself to save some money, or if it was worth every penny to get a professional to do it. Sounds to me like its worth the cost of a pro. I called my mechanic, and he quoted me $500 - $700 for the job depending on parts cost. I figured that it would cost me close to $350 just in parts. Sounds like its worth the extra to have him do it.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know.
