Checking shocks

Since my dealer is incompetent in diagnosing very obvious and annoying rear end noises, I figured I'd look into it myself.

Question: if I unbolt the rear shocks and roll my truck up and down the driveway to see if the sound is gone or not, will it cause any problems ? I will not go for a test drive, just 10 feet forward and back to see if my noises are gone

Thx

Take them off completely and go for a ride if you want. Won't harm anything the truck will just be bouncier. What are you trying to accomplish?

Trying to diagnose a really annoying thumping sound while driving, especially while reversing out of the driveway. The dealer hears it but can't figure it out

So tonight i looked into it and found it's the bracket that holds the leaf springs together . I clamped the bracket and the noise stopped

I have that noise as well, I notice it when I stand on the front tire to clean the windshield as it causes me to rock the truck back and forth. Guess I will check mine out as well.

I was under my truck today and found that one of my rear Rancho shocks is leaking. They'll warranty it but I was wondering if it would be possible to pay the difference and get a shock of my choice on there?

You can probably buy the shocks you want and have the dealer replace them for you; you take home the new replacement ones. More than that, I can't see it.

I had both rancho rear shocks replaced by dealer under warranty at 9000 miles. All rear noises were gone. This was on my 2014 silverado.

My 2014 Sierra 4x4 Z71 has a hollow thumping sound under the truck, Can be heard on both driver and passenger side. Very hard to hear when you first drive the truck but gets louder the more you drive. Especially noticeable when driving slow over bumpy road and turning. Had it in once to the dealer, but they couldn't hear it. Its back in today and made them drive with me and they heard it. Will see what they come up with.

If you think one of the rear shocks might be bad (and you want to test them) step on the rear bumper and get the rear suspension to start going up and down. Listen for any abnormal noises. If something doesn't sound right remove the lower bolts that mount the shock to the axle. Let them hang and then step on the rear bumper and repeat procedure. You should be able to do this while in the driveway (no test drive necessary). If the sound doesn't go away it might be squeaky leaf spring or be coming from some other source.

I had bad clunky/squeaky sound that ended up being one of the rear shocks. Replaced with Bilstein 4600 series and the noise went away. Here is my thread: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/170078-rear-shocks-replaced-question-regarding-compression-of-factory-ranchos/
