All - my recommendations are for buffeting only, this is all I was working on since my truck does not exibit anything associated with this thread.

I'm a bit confused. This thread is mainly about the buffeting noise, and the associated pressure sensation. Is that the issue with your vehicle?

20sierra14 - If the cotton in the mic well is totally safe from a fire hazard, this is a recommendation (based on my research and your testing). I did not think of this during my testing but I like it. Cotton alone won't do it though, the grille must also be mitigated. Or, if the grille is mitigated correctly, cotton may not be necessary. Did you try that. My testing did not require the use of cotton but provided max aesthetics.

wrench589 - my issue is associated with the "Enhanced Sound" thread, but this thread could benefit. I think the times when I get pressure, their connected. Saying anything associated with this thread was not accurate

Based on my experience, the pressure in your ears sensation is most pronounced over rough/gravel roads at low speeds. From my previous posts I was able to recreate the pressure "at will" by finding a stretch of road with some raised reflectors. You could also try the side of a road/highway that has rumble strips. Pull over and stop, drive slowly with your driver's side wheels running over them, increase speed to about 7-12 MPH, and continue to drive at the speed where the pressure/vibration/shaking starts. After a few seconds the vibration and pressure continues to resonate throughout the cabin until it is unbearable.

 

I don't want to discount that the ANC plays a part here as I agree with most that just sitting in the cabin didn't "feel right." It was a very similar "feel" to wearing noise cancellation headphones on or off a plane. The main difference is that you can just turn OFF the noise cancellation with headphones. It's a shame that there is not an option to disable ANC via the settings menu in these vehicles (or any vehicle for that matter) as it's an not a desirable option for everyone. I would bet real money that disabling would be relatively easy to do in software. Why GM is not offering this option as a potential fix, I don't know, but I would also bet there is some real cost/benefit/risk mitigation analysis going on with certain departments....

My vehicle - if I didn't have XM, I wouldn't have any pressure at all, I would have never been on this thread. Gravel roads, V8 to V4 transition, tires wheels, and a host of other issues is not present in my vehicle.

 

Question, with Escalade, Yukon, and Tahoe having the same body and chassis, why is my vehicle different? I understand their will be different options, but generally their the same vehicle. I inferred this a few hundred posts ago

Let's just talk a couple of glaring differences in my vehicle. For staters, I have a Premium Ride suspension (PRS) versus you guys having the Magnetic Ride suspension (MRS). I started a thread to say how spongy I thought the PRS was and you guys with MRS talk about how stiff, totally opposite. My mics are covered, you guys mics are exposed.

 

These differences may or may not impact ANC. But my mics may already be in the enclosed position (in essence what 20sierra14 achieved with the tape and cotton balls), can't tell. And my suspension mitigates bumps and road transitions better, you guys suspension probably handles roll better. These 2 differences could impact how ANC performs.

No, the grilles are sitting in the cup holder. There's no way to put 2.5 cotton balls in that space and still re-install the grille -- that's where the masking tape comes into play.. It looks absolutely horrible, but my ears appreciate it.

 

ateam_burb is heading the right direction! Give us the option of turning ANC ON AND OFF - problem solved, GM isn't having to buy back trucks!

You know, with all the research I've done, I think it doesn't matter the brand or model, all are the same, check around (although I have not heard any chatter from base models, they are equipped with the 8 pins versus the 16 pins in the amp. 8 pins does not have ANC). Just because I may not be experiencing something in my vehicle, there may be a different comment from someone with the same brand and model. I believe if the truck has a certain speaker configuration with or without ANC, added to the fact of whether your mics are covered or exposed is a large percentage of the problem. The other percentage will probably be engine size, cabin occupancy, stability of the headliner, extended versus not, etc, etc. Folks are doing what they can, but this issue is way beyond what the customer can figure out and remain within warranty. Just too many dynamics, and that's just for GM and Bose. I have not really dug deep into the XM piece.

 

I would suggest customers do what they can while remaining within the scope of their warranty in "hopes" that GM issues a fix. I emphasize hope.

 

The dealer may do more, but what can a customer do to obtain some relief and remain in scope; pull mic pins from fuse 48, or pull mic pins from the amp, or muffle the mics. 20sierra14 chose to muffle the mics, and other than aesthetics, he's loving his truck.

 

I have a Tahoe LT outfitted like the LTZ with the exception of MRS.

My preferred option would have been to pull the connection from the mic, at the mic. But don't really know if that would have been an option since I can't get to the mics. That leaves the three above options. The one that would not require experience with pulling pins (you have to be delicate or the pin "catch" will break-off from the "housing") is muffling the mic (mtm). Most folks may not like the mtm option because of how the photos in post 498 looks, or you just may not want to fool around with it. I would have used a variation of the mtm concept but from the photos, not sure of electrical connections in close proximity to the mic when applying cotton. I may not be able to see my mics, but I have seen schematics of the wiring under the headliner.

 

There is another option, do nothing and just wait on GM or a dealer to figure something out.

Or check with your GMC dealer for a cost, I may be able to purchase a set, previously they asked for a VIN. You know I didn't ask, I just figured they wanted the VIN from a GMC product. Maybe my VIN will work, if it does, disregard my request.

As another prospective Tahoe/Yukon buyer and 10+ year member of another automotive forum I was doing my due diligence when I found this thread. You guys have done a great job of diagnosing this problem but it is astounding that GM has done basically nothing even after buying back people's vehicles (which they then re-sold??). Having to stuff cotton balls into your $70K vehicle to eliminate an annoying sound is totally unacceptable. I will be paying attention here before deciding whether to go forward with my purchase.

So has the issue been resolved, or is it still a problem? Man I am SOOOO glad that i found this thread. We were looking at purchasing a Yukon Denali within the next month! Unreal that a $70k+ SUV has major design issues!

    • So I'm in the middle of a DOD AFM delete on my 6.2 L86 Sierra. I had a pick holding the tensioner but after I got the Cam phaser gear off I was cleaning off all the rtv and apparently I didn't have the pick seated far enough in. I bumped it and the tensioner sprang forward.  I think everything is good but I want a second opinion. The top of the tensioner is just a looped piece of plastic that rides in that channel right? There is no spring or anything is there? I got the gear and chain back on and it seems tight and everything looks right. I'm hoping nothing fell out.
    • My 2015 1500 LTZ Silverado suddenly won't go into 4 x 4 low. It will go into 4 x 4 high.
    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions. 
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
