New engine low oil pressure

Recommended Posts

Need some help. Built a new engine 5.3 had everything machined. And then I put everything together and just finished installing the engine and I'm getting low oil pressure. I did install the oil pressure restrictor on the back of the engine and the oil plug on the front. Am I missing anything. When it worms up the pressure is 40 psi and when I come to a stop it drops to zero.

Is this with cluster reading or with mechanical guage? Not sure what you mean by oil pressure restrictor.

On the back of the block it looks like a dumb bell and goes in the oil gallery just above the oil filter. And it's purpose is to force the oil through the oil filter and up the back of the block. Going to change the oil and possibly go with a heavier weight oil and see what effect that will have. I also put a oil plug in the front of the block in the oil gallery as well with some rtv sealent.

Have you verified your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge? The dash gauge can be somewhat unreliable so I'd start with verification prior to doing anything else.

+1 May not be an issue other than bad guage. That's my luck at least. I would check every thing first just to find out I should have started here... Good luck!

Sounds like you're describing the oil cooler line outlets, block-off plate. That's what is directly above the filter, if you don't have the cooler option on the truck.

As suggested, check with a mechanical gauge. Also as suggested you may have an o-ring problem
