AC limited cooling.

Hey all,

 

We'll I am headed to the dealer again for my reoccurring AC issue. I live in Texas where right now we are seeing 100+ during the day. My issue is that it takes at least 15-20 minutes of driving to cool the cabin down. I did not notice that as I bought my truck in January of this year. I traded in my 2010 crew cab which was solid and no issues except a transfer case seal leak and the AC worked as it should. It only would take 5 minutes or less to cool the cabin on 100+ days.

 

The dealer said they reprogrammed the AC unit for max AC, but this did not fix it. I have the system set to auto and the temp set to LO. I use the remote start to help with it, but I can also just jump into the truck (no remote start) roll the windows down and let the super heated air out and still the same thing.

 

Are any of you having this issue? If they can't fix this, I am going to keep at it with them and possibly peruse lemon law as this does effect use.

Delta T across the evap. coil should be around a 20 degree temp drop.

What is the actual temp of the air exiting the vents of your truck? You can easily check that and then we all can move onto other suggestions.

Vent temp using my infrared gun yesterday, 102 outside temp, 122 in cabin temp, start up vent temp 95. After rolling down the windows at start up and driving for 20 minutes, vent temp was 62. Now, I don't have a side by side comparison, but I did the same test on an older vehicle. Same outside temp and little different on the start up temp. But after the 20 minutes of driving, I had a vent temp of 52 degrees, which is acceptable in my book.

 

Don't get me wrong, I love my Silverado! I have had them for years, but I just want the AC to work correctly...

 

The blend door might be something to bring up at the dealer.

62*F is definitely too high if your AC is on max. Mine is usually around 50*F. You can pick up a hose with gauge pretty cheep at the auto parts store to verify your AC charge level. I'd start there and then move on to other ideas.

I live in Austin and my AC works just fine. It easily keeps the inside at 70*F on these afternoons, and does not need recirc or high fan to do it.

 

I did have my front windows tinted when I bought the truck, but it doesn't make that much difference. Make an appointment with the dealer to get a loaner until they fix yours.

Me too (live in the Austin area) and it cools just fine. I made sure that my max fan speed was set to high in the Settings. It allows the fan to start at the highest setting, but doesn't stay there very long.

I don't own the 14' model but ensure you are in re-circulate mode. if not, you'll never get the inside cabin temp to drop significantly. As stated, the A/C system is designed to produce a certain maximum temperature differential.

Here in Florida, due to high humidity it makes a huge difference whether you are in frsh air mode or recirculation mode. I normally leave my A/C in all vehicles in the recirculation mode.

 

GM typically makes good A/C systems, the only marginal system I ran across was in Chevy Aveo which is no longer made. That A/C was so weak it barely kept up on the highest level with Florida heat. The AC in all of my GM cars and turcks has been working great and I use them constantly here in Florida due to high humidity. Even in January!

Thanks for adding to this post. Ok, I have tested this in Re-circulation and Auto and their is no change in time or temp, which i find weird. I am not lost or confused by this. I think its either a low 134a issue or the expansision valve is not opening all the way. In Auto according to the owners manaual, (yea I read my owners manual) it states that it will automaticlly turn the Re-circ on if outside tempatures are high. Of coure no mention of what those outside temps are.

The manual A/C system in my '09 Impala will automatically revert to the recirculation mode if minimum temperature is selected. I can hear the A/C actualtor closin the duct door when that happens and the air blown in is noticeably colder.

Update: the dealer callled and said NPF. WTH! They recovered 1.33 LBS of 134a and loaded 1.33 lbs of 134a. So, they did not drive it and i asked for them to drive it in the afternoon at the heat of the day.
