Steering Wheel Radio Controls

I had a 2003 SLT Sierra 1500 that had steering wheel radio controls. I really miss them on my new truck. I am looking for anyone having information on how I might add steering wheel radio controls to my 2012 SLE Sierra 2500, Ext. Cab, Long Bed, OnStar equipped, with a AM/FM single CD player stock radio. I know I can order the control cluster that goes on the steering wheel but will it fit on my existing steering wheel? Is the wiring already in place? or will I need to additional wiring? Is the stock radio capable of doing this? Thank you for any help anyone may provide.

If you have cruise the radio controls are pre-wired. Not sure if a dealer has to program or not

Thank you for the info Brandon and Chris. I did not want to remove the air bag if the wires were not under it. I will now look for a you tube video on how to remove the air bag.

Received my new Original Equipment Steering wheel today. Ordered it from Ebay/JJ Original Equipment in Dallas, Texas. Opened the box and everything looked great. It is equipped with cruise control and radio controls. Went out and disconnected the battery for 20 min. Removed the Air Bag. popped off the old steering wheel. Installed the new steering wheel. replaced the Air Bag. hooked up the battery. Turned on the radio, and just like everyone I have asked or responded to my cries for help, the controls work just like they are suppose to. Thank you all for your help. Install time, 40 minutes including the 20 minute wait for the Air Bag system to discharge. Steering wheel cost, $119.00. After I recover for this cost I will be ordering a Costar Blue Star unit to replace my Over Priced on board GM cell phone.

I just checked on eBay, and found someone selling just the radion control part of the steering wheel for $35. I guess I'll have to do the same and add this to my steering wheel too!

thanks,

AndyW, I hope it works out for you and wish you luck on carving out the steering wheel for the control to fit. Let us know how it goes. This will definitely be a cheaper fix than mine. The steering wheel mounted control is one of the things I missed most when I sold my 2003 1500 SLT and bought the 2500 HD SLE. My new steering wheel was just a bit different under the air bag. there was a big hunk of metal attached just to either side of the center hub and slung down below it. It fits inside the steering wheel shroud and looked to be for some sort of sensor in the steering column. It might be just a counter weight, anyone out there know?
