6.2 air intake

Does anyone have pros and cons of air intakes? I am looking to get one for my 2014 6.2 Silverado. I was just wondering which ones are good and bad. I will also be getting it tuned.

What are you hoping to gain from an intake? Is it power? Sound?

I was thinking the biggest con is the cost vs performance. But yes, the noise because a lack of the plenum is a negative in my book.

The pros would be:

  • You think you feel some improved performance because you spent a lot of money and it's louder
  • you feel good about the first bullet above

I went with a Volant CAI bedause i had one on my last truck and liked it plus i had a spare filter that i used to rotate when cleaning & oiling one. I installed mine a week before installing a catback performance exhaust & 2 weeks before a custom tune. To me, the CAI by itself was too much air for the stock tune but once i installed the echaust it was great. Then the custom tune had max air & exhaust to benefit from. I love all of it. You can hear the CAI at times when the engine lugs but it quickly goes away once the trans shifts or the engine catches up.

Did you notice much difference is driveability and performance with the tune?

The normal in-traffic driving was unchanged. Any heavy acceleration there is a noticable increase in power and longer shift points. WOT is a BIG increase in power. With the CAI, Performance Exhaust & Custom Dyno Tune there was an increase of 50 HP and 50 Ft/Lbs Torque. The only drawback is that with the custom tune the top end limiter will be lifted but you still can't go any faster because of the drive shaft flex (massive vibration). I spent another grand on a custom 2 pc. high speed balanced driveshaft from driveshaft specialists in San Antonio, TX. Now she'll roll out as fast as I want. WOT from 65-100 is amazingly quick.

Did you have trouble with vibration? I have a vibration I can't get ride of. I have had my wheels balanced 4 times now. Just took it to the dealership today and am a little worried about my warranty. I have a 4 inch BDS lift with wheels and tires. I just hope they don't give some bs. I love the truck but the vibration is killing me.

I had a slight vibration @ 65 & above. I have read through most of the 200+ pages about it in the section right above this section. Because of all the mods i've done i deduce that the problem is in the transmission. Someone posted that they had tried several changes & that changing the rear trans mount solved his problem. I did that and it is almost nil now. Tciauto.com part# 952500. Its about $40 & easy to change. I still have a bad vibration above 65 when towing my boat. I'm thinking now it might be one of my trailer tires. That's my next check of trailer tire balance or a bad tire.

I have the Volant CAI with powercore filter on my 6.2 and I'm very happy with it. It's not too loud for me - you can hear it when you step on it or when the engine is lugging uphill or something but like Rocketman said when the truck shifts or engine catches up it goes away.

I've had it on for probably 4-5000 km now and I am probably getting one liter per 100 km better than without, and I've been driving it harder since I like to hear it. That's about $9 per fill up so the intake will pay for itself in about 6 months. I had the muffler cut off before I installed it, and will probably tune it one day

The fit when installing wasn't great, but I made it work. Other than that, so far so good

I got the airraid 200-111 for my 6.2 and I love it. At wot it sounds like a loud roaring wookie! I don't know why people want an aftermarket air intake but then want it quiet. I want it loud and everyone to hear me as I pass them up. That's just me I guess. At low throttle or regular cruising you can't even hear anything different from stock. It also improved my throttle response, it now gets to wot a deal quicker. I can tell there was an improvement in HP/TQ as well since I also have a magnaflow 12" mandrel exhaust. But I won't have hard numbers until I get to my local tune shop and have it tuned and dyno it. Mpg is about the same so far except I have been punching it alot more because it sounds so awesome. Man I need to make a youtube vid of it sounds freakin wicked.
