Shift into reverse...nothing happens.

I did a search but did not find anything...so if there is a thread already out there, I apologize. Last week, I remoted started my truck, hoped in, turned the key, the radio turned on, the gauges came to life, then I shifted into reverse and nothing happened, I pressed the accelerator and it was dead, I could not give it gas. I then switched into Drive, same thing, accelerator was dead. Put it into park thinking how am I going to get my kids to school. I did notice the check engine light was on, so maybe a code was thrown. Turned off truck, restarted and everything worked fine. Today the truck is in for oil change and recalls, and they are going to look at what code it was. Didn't know if anyone else has had this happen?

I have 21,000 miles on my truck, first hiccup besides the seat movement.

Thanks

I haven't heard of that before myself. My first thoughts were trans fluid level. I know you said you already took it in but when you get it back I'd be double checking the fluid level. Should be good being brand new but then with all the other "brand new" truck problems you never know.

You sure you turned the key all the way to the run position? It will kill the auto-start if you try to take it out of gear when turned to ACC i believe.

That was my first thought too....but I put my foot on the break, to shift into reverse, so doesn't that kill the engine when you remote start it? It did on all my other vehicles, so I assume that my Silverado is the same.

I did a test yesterday and if you remote start and don't get the key all the way forward and you touch the brake, and try to shift out of park, the truck will die.

Also, if you get it all the way to run, and then go back one click with the key, it kills the engine too.

I hope that is all it is, too many other things going on with these truck right now for yet another "bug" to be worked out.

Its not really a bug, almost any car with remote start will die if you dont get the key to the forward run position. Some will even die if you touch the brake before getting the key all the way up there too.

But the issue was my truck was running the whole time, I got it in reverse and drive, while the truck was running and it would no go. I could not give it gas or anything. So either it is a remote start issue or a transmission issue. I have a feeling it is the transmission, I am leaving soon to go pick it up and I will see what the code the check engine light threw.

I'd actually think it was a computer issue, nothing with the hardware/transmission/etc. Something didn't send the right signals to activate the system and then when you "rebooted", restarted the truck it was fine again. Just like every computer on the planet, the IT guy asks you if you rebooted first before he even looks at it and it fixes it 80% of the time.

Also made me think of the shift to neutral recall, wrong signal sent, but in your case no signal for some reason and all the fly by wire didn't go live.

I agree, sounds like a computer hiccup. Or not. A code was set, so it probably wouldn't go into gear due to a detected problem. When you turned everything off and then back on, the error probably wasn't detected so everything worked as it should.

Ok thats different. If the motor was still running and you were able to get into Reverse...something is going on.

I am currently at the dealership now with the same issue on my 2018 silverado 5.3 8 speed. I however didn’t auto start my truck. I entered my truck started it with the key and put it in reverse... nothing happened. My power steering also was not working. I shut the truck off and waited about 1-2 minutes and started it again and no change.

I called the dealership and was told to turn it off, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes and see what happens. After a 15 minute wait I turned it on and was able to get the truck in reverse. I drove it for about 1 mile but the truck wouldn’t shift correctly and the check engine light stayed on. Right now it is at the dealership and I am waiting for the results.

I have a 2018 Silverado as well with 1200 miles on it and mine did the same thing this morning.  Drove across town, stopped for breakfast, started my truck and had the steering assist issue pop up, will not move in reverse and no a/c.  Engine was running but tach showed 0 rpm, also showed traction control was off.  Steering wheel would not turn either.  45 minutes later, I was able to reverse out of the parking space and go straight to the dealer with it acting like nothing happened.  They have it now and said that they were able to duplicate.  They also said that it showed that communications dropped off a few times.  They replaced the ecm and said that they wanted to keep it overnight so they could try it again tomorrow. We'll see what happens!

Did anyone find out why this was happening? My 2018 Sierra with 21k miles did this but the check engine light cut off on my way home so not sure if dealership will know what to look for.

    • Common Sense Assembly   Your driveline is forgiving of the occasional mistake. It will even often forgive the random serious blunder. But it will not forgive a continuous bad habit.      What? Not everything needs to be a five thousand word essay.
    • We drove about 15 minute east today to visit a friend and saw a steep increase in price in the same county. About 50 cents a gallon steepper.
    • Sure about that? A degree wheel and a dial indicator would lower your degree of assurance in that statement. 😉    It why we have offset keys and dialable timing sprockets. Just say'n.... I've built a few and have never seen one "On the money".
    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
