Adaptive cruise option on truck?

Recommended Posts

I have this option on my wife's 2015 Tahoe and I absolutely love it. I sure wish they would make it available on the trucks. Any rumors of doing so in the future?

My 2014 Sierra 1500 has the lane departure and collision system warnings which makes me wonder if it could be added after-market.

Thanks!

It's one of those things that is a pretty good idea, but will just make people lazy and less aware of what's around them. I can understand something like the system where it puts on the brakes faster than you can when the vehicle senses something real close to it. People seem to want to do things other than pay attention while driving and car companies are making new systems just to accommodate that. Same reason why I think younger people (I'm only 29 though lol) and others seem to not even care about learning how to drive a manual because that means there's less things you can do while driving. I can't stand the auto parallel parking systems they're coming out with, just learn how to actually parallel park. I've only had to do it no more than 5 times ever since I started driving and I can do it with ease.

Just my 2 cents I guess.

That and adds an uncessary cost.

Say you want to go 72 mph. How many around you are doing that speed. You're lucky if one is. I see it every day. No way adaptive cruise would work, (for me anyway) because most people can't leave their gas pedal alone. They are constantly playing with it. In my daily commute on the turnpike, I see very few people doing a steady speed. Either going too slow, or too fast. Maybe they are different (better drivers) in other states, but I sure don't see it.

Changing traffic speed is the reason why adaptive cruise would be useful.

Adaptive cruise is like setting a max speed, and a minimum following distance.

When traffic is clear that's how fast you run. When traffic slows, your vehicle slows, without having to disengage the cruise. When traffic speeds up a little your vehicle also speeds up a little. When traffic exceeds your set speed your back at your set cruise speed without ever disengaging or re-engaging the cruise.

If you want it to 'cruise' at whatever speed traffic is running, set the cruise above the traffic's maximum speed.

Not to sound like a jackass, but God forbid the driver actually uses the brake and accelerator to control the speed. Heaven forbid the driver takes 1 second to touch the cruise button to turn it back on after you hit the brake to slow down. It's also not that hard to change the cruise speed with just the cruise buttons since you can change 1 mph at a time.

The way it works sounds all well and good, but I too would much rather control my own speed. It's bad enough people don't pay enough attention to the task of "driving". Now there are more and more things/gadgets that make the unattentiveness even worse.

Yup, refer to my 1st post lol.

I've often thought about the normal idiots that drive in today's world. Let them get used to adaptive cruise control with a car for a few years. Suddenly they trade out for a car that doesn't have it. Off they go and bam. Right into the back of someone possibly killing them because they were too stupid to pay attention.

I thought this was available on the new Denali Sierra? No? Is it just the lane departure and that crap? Thats disappointing.

No. Just the lane departure and the collision warning. It does seem strange that the truck can warn you you're about to rear end someone, but won't apply the brakes. The red led lights that flash on the window certainly grab your attention, though.

collision warning

I guess I assumed that if it had this then it had auto cruise control too... I mean there is already a sensor up there of some sort? I would think it wouldn't cost much to add on GMs part.

Sounds like what the naysayers said about automatics when they first came out. How will they ever get along when thay have to use a clutch?

And why do we need air conditioning anyway? What a waste. We can roll down the windows.

And how come the install radios and media players? Drivers should be paying attention to the road.

Technology never goes backwards, we just figure out more (and hopefully better) ways to use it.

Shifting gears isn't controlling the vehicle itself unless you downshift to use the engine to slow down. I also actually prefer a manual anyways. My first truck/vehicle was manual and I've driven 18 wheelers in cities when I tried out trucking and in local jobs so driving a manual in city conditions don't bother me.

Air conditioning is a luxury, but my first truck/vehicle of my own didn't have AC at all and I was fine.

Ya music takes away a little attention, but not much except for the people "dance" and move around too much, they should be able to control themselves. I'm still able to pay attention like you're supposed to while listening to music.

By the way, I only use cruise on the interstate on trips so my leg doesn't get tired. Some probably use cruise everywhere.

I like technology, but when it gets to the point where you are paying attention a lot less and making the person lazier then I don't like it. I shake my head at the systems that parallel park the vehicle for you. This is that it's not even that hard to do. I've only done it a handful of times in the past 13 1/2 years and I did it damn near perfect everytime. I'm one of those people that I want to be able to control the vehicle, not rely on a computer to control it in any way. The only exception is regular cruise control and as I said, I only use that for the interstate on trips thats more than just a few miles so my leg doesn't get tired. Even with it on I still pay attention 100%. I also actually drive an auto with 2 feet and I keep my left foot right at the brake pedal in case I need to hit it. What happens if you're counting on the vehicle to slow you down but you're not paying attention and then something fails and cause a wreck, just because the vehicle let you get too comfortable. But, I guess that's ok since it's technology.
