Adaptive cruise option on truck?

Just because it has issues in certain scenario's and doesn't work perfectly is no reason to not offer it, use it, or develop it. So you don't want the hassle, then don't buy it. I'm sure airbags in the 1980's had a lot of issues, but they were an option if you cared enough and thought the benefit outweighed the issues. This feature is the same way.

Give it 10-20 years and it will be standard, work perfectly, and have no issues. No reason to get in a big uproar if you don't want it. I promise in the next 20 years it will be standard, just like auto brake features.

I'm new to this forum but I feel I need to weigh in here. We just purchased a 2015 Yukon with Adaptive Cruise Control and a 2015 SIerra without it. The Yukon is my wife's and she drives 30,000 miles a year. Her real world experience with the adaptive cruise control was bad. The ONLY way to use the cruise control is with the adaptive feature.....there is no way to turn in off.

She had the cruise control on and was passing a car in the right hand lane and she was already in the passing lane.....the adaptive cruise control triggered thinking the car was in front of her, not beside her so it slowed her down. Problem was there was a semi behind her and he was coming at her fast. The adaptive cruise ALSO doesn't allow you to hit the gas pedal to accelerate......you have to turn it off first. Needless to say, this is dangerous.

We bought the Yukon on a dealer trade and did not request adaptive cruise control. Since we can't turn it off and use cruise, the dealer has offered to trade it in an make us whole. There is no way I would purposely buy this feature.....it's dangerous and we should pay attention when we drive....there is a lot more trouble than just cruise control going into slow moving traffic.

I find this to be strange. My wife's '14 Durango R/T has the adaptive cruise control. Both standard cruise control and adaptive are available, it's "dealer's choice", so to say. With either one I can easily override the cruise by stepping on the gas and passing without having to turn off the cruise. Either the Yukon has a buggy version, or some a-hole designer at GM needs a good Gibbs/DiNozzo head smack.

Myself, I would like to have adaptive cruise as a feature for long distance road trips. I don't use cruise for in-town driving, only for road trips. For the prices these trucks demand, current technology should be available from lower priced car classes.

i think she was in the left lane, a car came up in the right lane to do an illegal pass, and triggered the cruise to slow as a car too close.

The owners manual disagrees with this statement.

It says you can use the accelerator and that cruise will resumewhen you release the accelerator, just like the cruise we are all used to.

From page 9-56 of manual (2015 Yukon XL)

ACC Override
If using the accelerator pedal while ACC is active, a warning message in the DIC will indicate that automatic braking will not occur.
See Vehicle Messages on page 5-30. ACC will resume operation when the accelerator is not being pressed.

Picked up my new crew cab High Country Thursday. I live and drive in the Graden State..(ha ha ha) it should be the asphalt state. But my experience is that Adaptive Cruise is TERRIFIC. my truck has a load of options and I would love to have it in this vehicle

does any one know if you can ADD the Adaptive Cruise Control module to vehicles already equipped with the collision and cruise control options?

By the way, if you have half a head, you know when to set the cruise control

Imo, the danger is that people tend to put too much trust into those features.

I caught myself waiting for the "beep" of the parking assist while backing up a company truck. Just because I was used to it by my truck.

Back in the days when I learned driving, the only "technology" was an automatic choke.

I had to force myself to release the locked up brakes to go around an obstacle.

Sometimes it happened that I didn't even apply the brakes but stomped on the accelerator to avoid an accident.

...The adaptive cruise ALSO doesn't allow you to hit the gas pedal to accelerate......you have to turn it off first...

Nothing wrong with new technology. I just want to be able to take control whenever I feel I have to.

And when it is true what is quoted above, then the technology's failed.

Does anyone think that the jetliners they fly in are flown solely with pilots...the computers do most of it..and, when the pilot is needed, the pilot takes over.

Just like the vehicle. Even here in New Jersey where there is more pavement and people than most places on earth, there are times when the cruise is a pleasure to have and use and then I might have to take over again. I believe the option gives me an option.

I have only driven Toyotas and Dodges with adaptive cruise.

I'm not a huge fan of toyotas but forces you to pay attention more. While the Dodge's to me is great!

The active breaking on the durango's is great when coming up on stopped or slow traffic and someone who jumps in front of you. I work for a dealer and was testing out a new durango. I set the cruise for 70mph. Maintained great distance I wanted (select able). I also tested the stopping knowledge. I was coming up on an exit ramp from a freeway and the truck slowed it self down naturally until you get to about 15-20mph then fully disengages. I also tested out what would happen if I were cut behind someone quickly. The speed was cut appropriately

While the Toyota disengages once the car is forced to drop speed dramatically. And that's about it. Very simple system on the Toyotas (avalon and sequoia models)
