Weird gas tank situation

Well a week ago I bought a 78 Chevy for work/play. Went to put gas in it and was surprised to see nothing behind the gas door except daylight, lol. Looked around the truck and found it on the other side. And.....the filler neck is coming up through the bed!!! WHY!! Anyways, instead of running the tank back over to the other side just to have the door...I'm thinking of just rerouting the filler neck to another spot. Any ideas, suggestions of why this was done?? After 36 years I'm sure it had a lot of stories, but this is weird...lol

Could have been a problem with the left tank and the PO removed it,who knows why? :dunno: Maybe he thought it would be easier to fill it from the bed than to have to open the door on the side.I can't imagine why though, how hard can it be to open a little door and remove a cap.My old '77 had the filler neck on the sides also but that was before they put doors on them, man was it a PITA to fuel it up.

Amen Bro...with something 36 years old...who knows lol....I just don't know what's less time consuming, making a new filler on the passenger side or moving the tank...im guessing moving the filler.

If it was me I'd go back to OEM setup. Many GM trucks had two tanks(with a door on both sides),if the tank you have now is in the original location I think I'd find a filler neck & mount for the cap. That filler in the bed has to look like sh_t

In your OP I'm not sure if you have a door on the right side or not :dunno:

Just remembered....is there a rocker switch(for lt. or rt. tanks) on the dash just below the radio?

The previous owner did that so that the new owner would say "WTF!?"

LOL yah the filler neck in the bed is Dumbbbbbbb! I can't imagine getting a load of mulch and having to deal with it! There's no filler door on the side its on now...I could just cut one and fab a door. Maybe I can move it back to OEM...there's no rocker switch I doubt it was ever dual tank lol. Off topic..how to I get email notifications to posts? I've just been checking back now and again.

OK,so I think I'd move the tank back to where it's supposed to be.Gonna be a lot of work but that's the way it came from the factory.Try to mentally picture where the filler neck will be once it's on the correct side...you might have the wrong tank.Maybe something happened to the original tank and the PO had a rt. side tank laying around and had to use it,then rig up that mess you're dealing with now.

Go to your profile, there's a setting in there that(when checked) will send notifications via e-mail.

Thanks folks will do! I'll probably take off the body lift at the same time...would be a good time to do it all with the body on blocks.
