Spare tire won't release?

Thought this might be of interest to all those that have had the bad experience of trying to get their spare tire down from the stored position.

I have cured this problem on every pickup I have owned since the early 70's by just removing the spare when I bought the pickup and throw it in the box. Last couple of decades, also got a spare tire cover like ones on the back of Jeeps and such, and protect the tire from UV. Regular driving up and down gravel roads and mud, If I left the spare under there it would soon be caked with dried mud, gravel, etc. My 2013, I procrastinated for a couple of months after buying it new before getting the spare out. Had to take a pressure washer to it to get all the crud off on it. My 2015 2500HD, the spare came down and put in the bed the first week. For many, the under bed spare things might work well, but for those of us that frequent dirt roads, live in the major rust belt ares of the U.S. with all that salt, calcium chloride, etc during the winter months, not so much.
