Transmission Disorder

2001 Blazer 150k miles

First I would like to say I bought this knowing the trans was bad. I am not sure of too many details except that this is the second trans for this vehicle and it has about 75k miles on it.

I was going to use the car for parts but if I can fix it I will have a nice 4 wheel drive to use as a DD or whatever.

After I trailer-ed it home I tried to run it and after about 20 minutes it would loose all forward and rev movement.

I changed the fluid and filter.

The fluid did not have metal flakes in it and does not feel gritty. It does look kind of brown, kinda like clutch material.

This got the trans working again, but now there is a chatter/buck and some slipping when I get over 55mph at a steady cruise. I found a nice stretch of road to test this out. It does this in 3rd and 4th gear.

My guess is the 3-4 clutch pack is worn out.

Has anyone dared to go into the trans and rebuild? If so would you mind sharing your experience?

This repair is NOT a home repair bud ....by a novice yet

Changing oil and filter never repairs a mechanical concern .... Not sure why vehicle owners ALWAYS thinks oil will fix it ,,,,,,oil pushes Pistons and that's it !!!!

I hate those trucks , those trannies are a €~,!^~,%,.^^?\}^, to take out ON A HOIST NO LESS....lol

Hope it works out for you. You have more balls than I do because it's no way I would be comfortable enough to open up an auto trans. I feel comfortable with taking it out, but would then take it to someone and say "here you go" lol. A manual trans I could probably do as long as I have something for reference, but forget an auto lol.

I see you mentioned that you got it as a parts truck and I see you have a blue Blazer. Is the blue one only 2wd then since you say you want to get the white one going for a 4x4? If so and if you're not attached to the blue one then sell the blue one and put that money into the white one. My best friend used to have an 01 Jimmy 4x4 with the 4.3 and it was a good vehicle, he just wrecked it and ended up totalling it. He has said before that he wished it would have bought it back and rebuilt it with the insurance money lol. He has an '06 Sierra, but both him and his wife loved that Jimmy. He misses being able to do a u-turn on a small street where a full size vehicle would have to do a 3 point turn lol.

There's a lot of special tools so I have to improvise some.

The blue one is a 4x4 Jimmy and it's the wife's. It's got 250K miles and runs fine but needs emissions work. I'm keeping it for reference.

The white one has become a project truck. I am planning to have it ready by winter so I can keep my other trucks out of the crap. These blazer's are great in the snow and a perfect winter dd. It needs more work then the trans but this is the most involved repair.

I have 2 other vehicles with the same trans so this a learning experience as much as anything.

Yes you will have to , a cotter pin remover works REAL nice for the piston retaining rings ,

A home made aping compressor has to used some how ,

Be VERY ANAL when putting this together , use baby lube Vaseline for assembly , pressure wash carcass when empty ,

When road testing ,( full cold running on dipstick ) I used to go slow thru the gears , I would then gear down manually , .continue at 50 to 60 mph , then at 6 mile mark return to shop and pound the guts out of it going up and down the gears in D , ensure oil level is at full hot ,

Perform reset shift adapts with scanner BEFORE ROAD TEST !!!!!!!!!!

Your ass will be puckered during road testing , mine was every road test !

Satisfaction level at +10000 when done ,
