2004 GMC Sierra 1500 cruise control not working

My 2004 GMC Sierra cruise control just stopped working. I had no previous issues before this. I checked my cruise switch and brake pedal switch and cruise fuse with a ohm meter and they are okay. I have not changed any brake lights bulbs recently either and all brake lights are working. One strange thing to note is if I am driving down the road and rapidly continue pushing the cruise button the green cruise light will come on then back off rapidly as well.

I have fixed my cruise control and wanted to reply to help other people out. Under the hood is the place to start troubleshooting. Straight back from the battery mounted on the wall is a black box with two connectors. This is the Throttle Actuator Control Module and it has two connectors on it. With the key off remove the larger of the two connectors and the pin out goes as follows.

9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

 

pin 14 is cruise control on 12 VDC

pin 4 is cruise control set 12VDC

pin 5 is cruise control resume 12VDC

pin 6 is the ground coming from the brake lights. goes to about 11.6 VDC when the brake pedal is pressed.

 

With the connector off turn the ignition on but do not start the engine. Check for 12 VDC at the appropriate pins to check the cruise control inputs from your turn signal switch. Then check the ground coming from the brake lights. It should be a very low resistance. O ohms is best but single digits will work. This is where my problem was. I read 63 ohms. I then went through both tail lights and the 3rd brake light and just pulled the bulbs out and put then back in a couple of times to clean connections and my resistance went to 0 ohms. And my cruise control is now working again. Also at this same point the brake pedal switch can be checked. Switch your meter to VDC and press the brake pedal. Should go to about 11.6 VDC.

 

Hope this helps anyone struggling with the same problem.

I am having this issue right now on my ‘03. Exact same symptoms, even the quick flashing green cruise light. The only thing I would add is that I washed the truck recently ( in the Canadian winter) around the same time I noticed the cruise stop working. I also have a reverse light out but not sure if that is related. I appreciate this post because it gives me a place to start checking. Thank you.

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE. My Cruse control stopped working after I plugged my travel trailer into the trailer plug on the bumper. Here's the wierd part, it only works when I plug the trailer in now. When I remove the plug from the truck the cruse control stops working. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having same issues on my 1999 sirrea 1500 v6 only thing new in the truck is I added to 10in kicker and a 1100wat amp. And I upgraded my tailgate lights they plug into my trailer connector. Could one of them be my problem and if so how can I fix it without removing the new stuff I added
