You don't always need the special rivnut tool to install rivet nuts, that is if it is a rivet nut they are using??? Basically a rivnut tool has a draw stud with the same thread as the nut that will seat the rivnut into the sheet metal. If you don't have the tool you can use a screw and a regular nut with the same thread as the rivnut and use a few washers as a thrust bearing.

Place the rivnut into the sheet metal. Get the screw and thread the regular nut onto it than put on the washers. Screw this into the rivnut and turn the regular nut while holding the screw from turning to seat the rivnut.

Hope this helps

Another variation of the rivnut is the plusnut which just has 4 slots in the shank and allows the backside to expand into 4 petals with less force than a standard rivnut. The plusnut is the recommended type for plastic or thin sheetmetal.
