First off,

Thank you very much for your knowledge about this.

I appreciate your time answer my questions if possible:

My father in law put on what we believe is a Flowmaster 40 on his 2014 GMC Sierra Z71 5.3L and honestly I'm not too impressed with it. Yeah it has alittle bit of that rumble when its started but to me it sounds just almost like stock with just some improvement when ya accelerate on it.

We are trying to fix this problem to gain more sound etc kinda using his truck as the guinea pig then I'll get some exhaust for mine. My truck is a 2014 Silverado 5.3 model.

Anything we can do different to get more sound out of it. The shop told him because of 3 cats and the valve or whatever it is that will keep it in V8 thats why it suffers but again, I know you guys know more then they do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had everything from the muffler on back removed and had a Flowmaster Super 44 put in. It's loud and very aggressive. I left the 3rd cat. You should remove the resonator which is behind the muffler right behind the axle. You can see it if you look in the fender well.

Just cut the muffler off. I'm constantly getting compliments, people asking what muffler I have. I don't! Side benefit, doesn't get any cheaper.

I had a Super 44 put on and the tailpipe replaced with one that didn't have the valve/resonator - it was way louder than stock. Not obnoxious but it was way louder than stock.

I have heard some bad things about the Flowmaster 40 series about the interier sound when its in v4. Im getting a Magnaflow put on Wednesday. I have always used Flowmaster but if Magnaflow sounds better what I have seen on YouTube. My exhaust guy told me the 18 inch Magnaflow sounds the best and no noise in the interier when it switches to v4.

I had a custom exhaust done from after the third cat, and it is straight pipe to duals angled out the back behind the tires. By straight I do not mean I removed any of the three cats. they are all still there. I personally LOVE the sound it gives off. It sounds like a race car when you hammer down on it. Surprisingly it doesn't cackle and make obnoxious noises what so ever. Sorry, after a WOT acceleration it will cackle very little when slowing down rapidly. a cold start is pretty motivating when she roars to life, but after it warms up it isn't very loud. the pipes for the duals I believe are 2-1/4. they are not big. 18"-4" tips I believe as well....It just sounds good man.

Ya I hate glasspacks so I'm glad my Super 44 isn't like that. It's a single in/dual out muffler and I have the tips behind each rear tire at a 45° angle. The only time it crackles is like you described, when I'm WOT or close to WOT and then let off completely but that doesn't bother me. I don't even mind the V4 drone. It's very loud, but doesn't drown out the music so bad where I have to put it all the way up. I have yet put it over 1/2 volume and that's with all of the windows down. Mine's also very loud at cold startup. I can clearly hear it from the back end of the house and the truck always stays parked on the street. By the way, on the 5.3s the exhaust tube is 2 1/2". It's the best sounding truck I've ever had.

I forgot to mention the drone as you stated. I don't mind it either! And even with this setup I can agree with the volume, and the ability of having a conversation. I have even had my buddies mention that it isn't so loud you have to raise your voice. I had the Super 44 on my 04 Sierra 5.3L. It sounded pretty darn good. I ended up straight piping with the cats still in on that truck and it was loud. The 14' however is not.

I was thinking of the 18" magnaflow with flapper and resonator removed. Anyone had any experience with this same set-up? By the way, it's a 2014 with the 5.3. Thanks

Are you sure they're compliments?

Are you sure they're compliments?

Yeah, pretty sure! Most people who offer a backhanded compliment don't crawl under the truck to see!

I've had a couple which weren't complimentary, but don't knock it till you've tried it. Taking the muffler off on these trucks does NOT have the results one would normally expect.

I think someone posted a vid from YouTube showing the sound of just the muffler removed and it did sound decent and was still smooth. Just wasn't as aggressive like my Flomwaster Super 44 lol. As long as it doesn't sound like glasspacks or like a bumble bee exhaust you hear on some 4 and 6 cylinder engines then I'm fine with it.

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
