manual says I can tow in "D"

I've always read that towing in "OD" is bad for the transmission and have always towed with my 94 in drive, but not OD.

Reading thru my manual last night it does say that I can tow in "D", which is "OD" for a 2001, correct? I haven't seen an OD button or anything. Do I need to drop it down to "3" to tow or am I safe in "D" with tow/haul mode on?

I'm so confused

It depends on the load and what gear the trans wants to run in. If it holds OD then I wouldn't worry about it. If its constantly downshifting then I would drop it into 3rd. I've heard that the trans will run cooler in direct gear 3rd. Since you have the 4.10 ratio you should be ok in OD depending on the load.

dont forget about that nice tow haul button on the shifter

The load is an 18ft bass boat, weighs ~ 2500 lbs with gear, gas and trailer. Once I get use to driving it in 3rd and D around town I'll see what's best I guess.

I may call the dealer to see what they recommend.

Your 1994 truck didn't have this feature, but your 2001 has Tow/Haul mode which is designed to allow towing in top gear.  Just tap the end of your gearshift lever when pulling out with a heavy load.  I pull a several-ton 5th-wheel RV in OD all the time.

I agree clk7711, as long as it isn't shifting up and down you will be fine.

With that light load (only about 33% of your towing capacity) I wouldn't even bother with "Tow/Haul".  Just drop it in gear and go.

Sorry, Thou Most High and Holy Senior Moderator, but I didn't notice Your post.   A thousand pardons, please, if I have offended Thee.
