A/C with Air recirculation on????

I took my 2015 in recently with this complaint - every outside odor gets pumped into the cabin whether or not the recirc button is pressed, and in all circulation modes. I recently went on a long enough drive to try all combinations of buttons to no avail - car exhaust, diesel exhaust, fire smoke, cattle farms...

The dealer told me they could not reprogram the re-circulation door to close more. They said it's a program package - like a firmware I'm guessing - that can be uploaded to the vehicle, but they're not allowed to individually program items. I don't know if this is BS or what.. I do know I get nearly instant headaches from car exhaust and diesel exhaust - cattle farms are just annoying..

I've at least temporarily given up on the dealer and GMC to help and I'm trying this:

I still get a hint of exhaust smells now and again but I think it's much better than before. I did make a trip to a waste transfer station (an indoor refuse dump).. the smell in one of these places is awful. I left the truck running, recirc on of course. The smell inside was probably 85 or 90 % better than outside.... At this point I'd recommend this cabin filter.... At least it's pretty cheap to try out.

Recirc still intakes a % of fresh air so that positive pressure can be maintained in the cab to prevent dust intrusion.

I think that's the complaint most of us have - if I'm not where it's dusty - I'd rather risk that than get all the ass smells from outside...

GM... Damned if they do...Damned if they don't!! Bunch of cry babies can't touch a re-circulation button when they crank the truck. Candy Asses!!!

I have the exact problem the service adviser told me there is a fix! I have to pay they to rig that door shut do it stays 100% closed. I cannot wait to get rid if this Terrain, it's days are numbered!

Me too! Hate all the smells!

Really need a fix for this!!! I used to drive 99 silverado and never had an outside odor issue while a/c in recirculation. Kinda stinks...no pun intended but. WHY would a new truck have this issue. I would think technology has gotten better over the years. Not worse!!

There are benefits to having a positive cabin pressure that outweigh the occasional observation of outside odors at 10%.

Buildings have to be designed to provide specified CFM of fresh air volume depending on a variety of factors. It's healthier for occupants AND it reduces dust infiltration.

Occasionally I can detect something I don't like - skunks or chicken houses anyone? - but it's minimal and clears quickly because of the 10% MUA (make up air).

To take the principle a little further, have you ever noticed when walking into a bank or hospital/clinic, upon opening the door you feel a rush of conditioned air? These buildings operate with a positive pressure and it keeps them from sucking in dirt and dust every time the door opens.

I have had my 2500HD Diesel LTZ in 4 times for the same issue. Of course now they are feeding me the 10% story.. I am going to try to hang in there a little longer and hope GM decides to solve this issue. I really like everything about my truck but this... When I am on the road I like to stop at rest stop and nap for a minute. I did this on last trip and could smell exhaust.. I will deal with the dust.. This problem needs to be addressed...

I am wondering if you all still smell any outside odors like if your going through an area when where there is a smoke smell from burning or a sulfur smell maybe from stagnant water etc. through the vents with the A/C on even when you put the air in recirculation. I still get some of the outside odor didn't on my Fords. wondering if maybe some ducting is not sealed correctly or if this is normal for the Chevy/GMC?

I guess the simplest way to ask what I am asking would be do you still get some outside odor when you have your a/c on and press the cabin air recirculation button?

Simple answer is yes, even on Recirc there is a small amount of makeup air introduced as a safety measure. In the 50's even given the poorer quality of door seals with the vents closed you could ride over a bunch of dead skunks and not smell a thing. It was GM that first came out with their "flow through ventilation" crap in the 60s and 70s, may have been the result of a CO lawsuit, which kept the vent cracked and the fan on ultra-low speed whenever the engine was running. TV ad showed a smoke bomb going off in a closed car with the vents closed and the interior gradually clearing as the engine ran.

I don't know if current models use the ultra-low fan setting but there is active venting when the HVAC is in use even on recirc .....now when you run over a dead skunk with windows closed, you will smell it

Took the Ford F250 diesel lariat for a drive to possibly trade in... The chevy interior is so much nicer, more comfortable, steering, ride, power, everything better with my LTZ... Made my decision easy to keep my truck and figure out how to solve the venting problem.. Please GM.. Offer us the option of fully closing this vent.....

I guess I'll stick my neck out on this one. I am happy that a little fresh air is always allowed in the cabin. These vehicles are made pretty air tight and I believe a family riding in this enclosed box could potentially reduce oxygen levels for the driver. Maybe this is a ridiculous, but I know I feel more alert with "fresh" air!

    • I am having similar issues.. 08, 4.8L granted I did had a fender bender and minor damage up front passenger side but I don’t think it had anything to do with it.. I had the high and low pressure checked and my fan for my radiator keeps coming on.. replaced the pressure switch and don’t want to keep throwing parts at it. I did have some minor problems here and there like on long road trips sometimes the ac would get a little warm and then on the highway as soon as I give it a little gas or get a little heavier on the petal it started running cooler. Never had an issue with the ac besides the here and there.. but I also started having issues when I fuel up now it takes a bit to start ( super embarrassing) it runs fine and once started ( only happens after fueling up) starts fine any other time. Could they be related?
    • Spent a small fortune on fuel this weekend.   $6.69 diesel, 18 gallons of that. $6.99 92-octane ethanol free, 10 gallons of that for yard machines $5.59 87-octane for one of the cars, 11 gallons.   $250+ and I didn't even get a tug.   Hormuz ain't Hormuzin again, did not see that coming...LOL
    • Appreciate the advice. I've watched multiple videos. Most showing the most complex for those that have a center console, to one that showed maybe 2 pieces of trim being removed, like 6 screws, pulling back the screen and switch assembly, and installing the inline module. And this was a new/newer Silverado. That didn't look too bad. All the others show alot of trim pieces that need to be removed. I've broken those kind of tabs/clips on my C8 Corvette trying to get to the battery, and that was a lot less clips than what I think is involved here after watching multiple videos and looking at my dash today. I have one on the way. Called a reputable stereo place about installing it and got a "minimum" price of $175. Ouch! Looking forward to seeing what the instructions have to say.
    • Hard to say what the issue might be. Anything from the ability to cool the AC condenser up front, to blend door issues in the HVAC unit, to refrigerant charge, to compressor issues or issues in the lines.   Report back what the techs find on the 29th.   GM has service publications which list acceptable vent temperatures and AC pressures at given ambient temps and humidity. They probably won't touch the system if it's operating within those ranges.   I'm also surprised to hear your 2024 with the L8T is still using R134a? I was pretty sure the HD's had switched to the new refrigerant around 2020.
