Door Speaker Question?

Recommended Posts

Posted

The tweeter in the door panel on the driver's door fell out and is now dangling from the wire behind the screen cover.  Nice for an '02 Z-71 isn't it?

My question is does the screen come off for a quick fix or am I going to have to remove the door panel?  If the panel, any tips anyone can share?

Thanks in advance...

The door panel has to come off.  The screen has tabs that fold back to fasten it to the panel.  Have it done if you take it to the dealer oil changes or the like.  It's covered 100% under warranty, unless you're over 36000 miles.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rattle noise in either front side door or that the upper tweeter speaker has fallen out of position.

Cause

A material incompatibility between the door trim and the door tweeter speaker may cause this condition. Over time, the two posts used to attach the tweeter to the door trim may fracture.

Correction

New grommets have been released that will be placed over the tweeter speaker posts to isolate the two materials and correct this condition. Grommets will have to be attached to the current stock of tweeter part numbers. The new tweeters will have the two grommets already attached to the posts.

Replace the tweeter speaker and add grommets as necessary. The door trim panel post holes for any tweeter part number will have to be slightly enlarged to accommodate the grommets.

Use the following procedure and refer to the Parts Information for the applicable speaker parts/usage.

Remove the front door trim panel. Refer to the Trim Panel Replacement - Side Front Door procedure in the Doors sub-section of SI.

Remove the speaker grille. Refer to the Speaker Grille Replacement - Front Door procedure in the Entertainment sub-section of SI.

Remove the tweeter speaker retaining nuts.

Remove the speaker from the door trim panel.

Enlarge the two tweeter speaker mounting holes in the door trim panel to 9.525 mm (0.375 in) (3/8 in). This will accommodate the grommets. This step is required before the installation of any tweeter part number.

If replacement tweeter speaker P/N is 15772411 or 15071121, attach one grommet (3), P/N 15204327, to each of the speaker posts.

Position the speaker (4) into the opening in the door trim panel (2).

Install the tweeter speaker retaining nuts (1). Tighten

Tighten to 1.6 N·m (14 lb in).

Install the speaker grille. Refer to the Speaker Grille Replacement - Front Door procedure in the Entertainment sub-section of SI.

Install the front door trim panel. Refer to the Trim Panel Replacement - Side Front Door procedure in the Doors sub-section of SI.

If the truck is already out of warranty, just take the door panel off, and run 2 screes into the speaker, where the posts broke off. This is how I fixed mine last year, and no problems since. :)

:)

2002 Z71 EXT Cab here, same thing happened to mine also. Noticed a buzzing first. and then saw the tweeter hanging down inside the panel. 8,000 miles at that point....

They did fix it no problem, now if I can just get them to fix the rear windows...Third try on that

2002 Extended Z71 Sierra. Same exact problem. d**n, I guess it was a bad year for the tweeter installers on the assembly line...

01 Z71 too!! Doesn't seem to affect the sound, though. I just happened to notice it while cleaning one day. I crank the factory sound as much as possible and don't hear any rattle, so I've just left it alone. New/improved speakers are on the 'to add' list.

"A material incompatibility" lol

When I swapped out the speakers in my 02 Z71 the driver's side kinda just poped off. I was replacing them with aftermarket but I still thought it was a bit odd. Of course when i went to remove the 6" in the passenger's door I couldn't get the damned clip to pop loose so I had to pry the hell out of it to pop it out. :/ go figure.
