Manual Running Boards/Steps

So I know the AMP power steps are all the rage, and they are nice but at over a grand I am not interested.

I was looking at different style and options to keep the clearance that tuck up to the body and there are some nice options. One thing that kept popping up was the bed side steps that pop down. They did not retract unless pushed up but still, good idea.

First question is has anyone tried using these as a step instead and mounted them by the doors? Is there a way to make them return on their own? In other words once popped down they had to be given a little push up, they wouldn't return on their own to the closed position once someone has stepped off them.

Finally, it would be nice if someone made a manual retracting running board similar to the amp or individually like the bed step that one could put their foot on, have come down then return up on their own once stepping off of it. Of course be manual, not much in to power exterior parts as well as the expense that comes with them; at a cost of $500 or less.

I will probably just go with a low profile flush board similar to the raptor but thought something like this would be a neat idea at a cost savings.

Good point, maybe a little higher, say $750 capped? Plenty of good ones under $500, the RB10 is a top choice, few other brands I like such as Romik I want to learn more about. I got some time though.
