00Silverado4x4 Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Anyone else have or use an air rifle. I bought a Daisy Powerline 880 about a year ago. I use it for target shooting, chasing off rodents, and putting a few holes in left over beer cans. Plus the kids get a kick out of it so why not? I shot this thing probably a few thousand times since then but one thing that is kicking my butt is the included scope. With the iron sights I can hit dang near anything at 20 yards or so but the scope doesn't seem to want to zero in for anything. It's a cheapy Daily 4x15 so I'm not expecting any miracle shots but would be nice just to hit the target once in awhile. What are some good tricks to sighting in a scope? You'll have to keep it real simple as I know virtually nothing about scopes.
BlackZ71Silverado Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 My nephews are into air rifles. Them seem to enjoy them but the older one (10yrs.) is starting to like real rifles a little better. I've had him shooting .22LR this past summer and he loves it. The air rifles are much better and far more powerful than what I had but just not the same as using the .22. I also had an air rifle when I was a little boy and it was nice to have as a child and learn to shoot with it. Haven't had an interest in air rifles since I was about 9yrs. old. There are actually some people who hunt small game using air rifles. Some of them are very close to a .22LR when it comes to ballistics using them to shoot small game. Some are actually pretty impressive, but expensive. For the prices of the better air guns, you are better off just buting a .22 rifle.
00Silverado4x4 Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 I agree a .22 is a lot of fun, but with neighbors all the way around my place it would be incredibly dangerous. Plus with the air rifle being quiet, no one's offended if I, with or without the kids, spend the day shooting.
GMC-AT Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I just shot my poweline 901 today. Those daisys are great. I have an upgraded 22 scope..works fine. Should be able to get a much nicer ...and wider scope for under 40 bucks. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
crafferty Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Have you guys seen The Texan by Air Force? Got my hands on it earlier this year at the shot show. Pretty darn impressive for a air rifle. Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
00Silverado4x4 Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 That looks like one serious air rifle, a bit over kill for target practice for me. Although if I could get my hands on one...I'd take it.

An air rifle is just as dangerous as any other firearm if not operated safely. There are many air rifles made that are very similar to a .22Magnum in velocity. Dry fire your air rifle, you may be surprised, I know I was. The air rifle I have was louder than any .22LR when dry fired, scared the shit out of me to be honest!

I just know a .22 rifle has a much longer range vs my air rifle. Plus my back stop doesn't have to be nearly a thick with an air rifle compared to a .22. The dangers is exactly why I don't let the kids shoot unless I'm with them all the time. I was enough of a hazard when I was that age back at the farm...literally. I want to make sure my kids to know what they're doing before I let them loose with any kind of firearm, air rifle or otherwise.
BlackZ71Silverado Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Very important to teach youngsters proper firearm handling. It's super important now with all of the anti-firearms nonsense that continues to go on. Certain people want to have other fear a firearm, teaching children the proper and safe way to do things will really help them understand there is really nothing to be afraid of. Start saving aluminum cans. I know my nephews love shooting cans because they are reactive, they got bored shooting paper. Once the kids learn, you are going to have your hands full and you better get ready to buy another rifle!
Parish Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 My Grand father hooked me up with a Walther model 51 .177 when I was a kid. If I could see it, I could hit it with that thing. Love me a good spring gun. I have killed more game with it than firearms.
Cowpie Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I have been doing a little research lately in to compressed air cartridges that fire regular bullets. I have seen varieties in .257, .308, .357, and .40. Some serious 1 MOA at 100 yds capability. Not sure I will invest in something like this but it is interesting. Definitely only for the most serious air gun aficionado. http://www.inovairtech.com/Magnum_Air_Cartridge_MAC_s/1819.htm
tnchevy Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I bought a gammo a few years back for $100 or so at basspro. Thought it was junk till I replaced the scope on it. Found out that it was just the scope that was junk. I've killed dozens of rabbits with it a 40 yards. Very deadly if you hit where you aim. I've also got an old model 1890 in .22 Long (not long rifle) that is even more fun to shoot and more quiet than my air gun but .22 Long bullets are near impossible to find anymore.
firsttimer Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 The scope mounts are junk on most of the air rifles. Also you have to use the artillery hold on spring air guns for accuracy. Also dont ever dry fire them, awfully hard on the internals Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
