Transmission Clunk

Hi all

Wanted to to say first of all that this is an excellent site!  I'm from the central Maine area and just bought my 2002 Silverado extra-cab 4wd with the 4.8 this last Sat.  Love this truck!  Anyways, I think I had seen this mentioned here some where before but couldn't find it again.

Every once in a while I notice there is a slight "clunk" when the trany shifts (sometimes from 1st to second, and others from 2nd to 3rd), while other times it doesn't make the sound at all.  My question is, is this normal, or is there a fix for it.  The truck only has 19,000 on it so I've got plenty of warranty left.  Should I have this checked out, or is it normal operating proceedure?

Thanks

Do a search for clunk. We have discussed this at length. It is not normal and the dealership will fix if under warranty with a nickle yolk. If not there are other ways to get it quite, like changing the fluid. It wont hurt anything, it just dont sound right.

Will do, thanks for the reply.

Sounds like your factory yolk needs replacing with the new nickel yolk. Your dealer will do for free under warranty. Had mine done and no problems since.

Has this been corrected on the newer models?   I have a 2003 and have not noticed anything.....yet.

Hey, I have the same problem with my 99 Silverado.  Sometimes it shifts hard and feels like the is some slop in the drivetrain.  Where are you located in central Maine?  I am from Lewiston.

Word has it that the problem was fixed by the 03 production run. I refer to it as like the yelp that a sea lion makes...a sharp, creaking sound. It occurs at start from a dead stop and is due to slack in the drivetrain at the rear yolk. You'll know it when you hear it. Most likely you will be OK.

I've had the trifecta of possible solutions and now have no clunk.  They greased the splines first- worked for a while, then came back, but was good after the next time they did it.  Changed the transfer case fluid to the newer "blue juice".  Finally, they put the nickel yoke on.  No problems now.

Sorry for sounding stupid, but what is a "nickle yoke" and what does it do? I am just wondering because I have the same "clunk" sound from 2nd-3rd gear in my 2001 Tahoe 5.3 (4WD). Thanks.

Sorry I can't help you with what the difference between the stock yoke and the nickle plated one (other than its nickle plated  )

But I just had mine replaced, and it completely took care of the clunk.

I assume all of you have automatics? I have a bad transmission clunk on my brand new 2006 but I own a 5spd manual tranny.
