Retrofitting the factory integrated brake controler

Recommended Posts

I also have purchased a P3 and I intend top mount it in the dash in the same place as where the OE IBC would be (except my dash has the coin/storage pocket instead of the IBC). I'll do a write-up and pictures as I do the mod... I have a replacement dash piece on order ($20 is all!) for the switch panel (4x4 control, headlights, and coin/storage pocket). Surprisingly, the P3 will fit in the pocket if you trim out the left side of the pocket... it will go in as far as the manual lever pivot on the bottom at the same time that it bottoms in the pocket. I'll then use a urethane foam to make a custom fit foam insert and will likely use at least one of the screw holes in the side of the P3. This should be a very clean install when I'm done...

I too have no desire to mount it low on the dash where I'll either bang my leg on it, or won't be able to reach it easily to change programs, or use the manual lever.

Thought I had posted this picture before.... maybe it was in a different thread...

Thats weird I wonder what that plug is for I will take a picture of it.

Yes, the connector/plug behind the bezel is for an IBC... what ISN'T included in trucks without the OE IBC installed is all of the logic and programming in the BCM to recognize it. Plugging in an IBC won't get you anywhere - that is why everyone here (and at the dealer) have confirmed that an upfit of the IBC is not possible in non-OE equipped vehicles.

well 07-13s could be done so Im sure if you got right into it could be done possibly just be prepared to spend a fortune. my body style the complete body harness had to be replaced, the modules had to be add, and the bcm had to programmed with a trucks vin that had it oem. if the same could be done on a 15 I can see that being 4k even sourcing junkyard parts. compared to under a 100 bucks for a brake controller its insaine.

NO it CAN NOT be done, what don't some of you understand?

If your truck did not come equipped with the OEM controller, your ONLY option is an aftermarket unit, that's it, no other choices.

I don't think you are understanding how it was done to a gmt900. you basically had have another parts truck to do it and pull almost 80% of the wiring out including the bcm body harness dash harness. etc... you had to add a module under the frame too.

Anyone willing to go thru what nekkidhillbilly is proposing... please contact me as I've got many (better) ways to spend a couple grand of your loose change. If you've got that much money to just throw around/away, then you must have some that you can spare to send to me.

Yes, if you want to go thru that much effort and have unlimited funds, ANYTHING can be done... including making a crew cab out of a two door; or an LTZ Z71 out of a WT. But, the short answer is, unless you have cubic dollars to throw away just to make the factory IBC work then it isn't possible. Most people are looking at this as a "If the connector is there, won't it work?" situation. The answer (if yours didn't come with the IBC as an OE install) is a definitive "NO!"

Greetings all,

I've searched and read a few other threads, but haven't found a consensus of opinion. I recently picked up a 2015 Denali. The truck has a towing package, but not the Max that includes the integrated brake controller.

I know there are some great aftermarket pieces, but I like the clean look of the IBC. Does anyone know for sure if the factory harness has the IBC plug behind the little blank slot in the dash? I don't want to hack into the harness, but if there's a pig-tail back there that I can plug an IBC into I'd prefer that. Even the dealership can't give me a sold answer so I'm hoping someone here has first hand experience.

Thanks in advance, Dana

Not sure if you found your answer but I just did it. My truck came with out the controller as well. A month or so after I bought it the dealership sent me a wiring harness that could be used with an aftermarket controller. I bought the factory controller instead. When I pulled the dash apart the harness was already there. My travel trailer is in storage. I'll let you know if it works on Saturday. The swith costs $38.17 from gmpartsonline. post-136900-145516248302_thumb.jpgpost-136900-145516249191_thumb.jpgpost-136900-145516249887_thumb.jpg

Well, it's taken me a little while to return to my own thread, but.. After reading through the replies, it seemed the answer was to use an after-market unit. I went with the P3 and had a shop here do the installation. All I really wanted was to open the pocket up and slip the unit in. But the shop did a really nice job of glassing in around the P3 (which has some oddly shaped corners) and fitting the controller into the dash.

Over all I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I've been thinking about doing this same thing. P3 in the pocket. Awesome work guys.

Looks really nice BlueDenali... but I'd hate to ask what the shop charged you for the custom glass-work.

I've got video of the little bit of dremel work I had to do in order to make the P3 fit as shown in my earlier photo... was maybe 20 minutes of my work. But here are a few of the pictures of the final outcome of the piece before mounting the P3.

Note the slits on the right end of the "SideCutout" extending from the corners of the cutout. They create a flap between the front of the bezel and the cutout I created. The slits allow that flap to flex outward while grabbing the side of the P3.

Thanks Bob. I thought about doing t myself, if I had seen your example I may chosen that path. I don't recall the shop costs being too very much, but the cost included the purchase of the P3 unit so I couldn't tell you how much extra the work was.

It is really nice having the unit right in the dash where you can see it. My last truck had the unit mounted in typical location under the steering column. I like this much better!

Hey Mario, I was wondering if your Break controller lights up as if we're to be working., after reading a lot on this subject I believe that just adding the oem controller won't work for the trailer purpose, but I hate that cubby empty space that I would rather have the break controller. I also have the wires behind the cubby.

I guess what I am asking is, when your dash lights come on at night does the break controller lights up as well?
