3.08 to 4.56 Gear swap?

I was charged $350 an axle (labor only) on my 02 plus supplies and taxes. I think mine was $830 out the door. If you wait, I'm sure in the next year or so Yukon will have direct replacement gear sets. Im sure they're in product development by now. If you look at how many newer lifted trucks there are, most of them are part of the GM family. They know they're losing out on money right now, but from what I've seen no one else has gear sets out either

I just don't want to put that much more strain on my transmission for that long. I drive a 1600 mile round trip every month or so. Give or take a hundred miles.

I have a '14 Silverado Z71 with the factory 3.08 ratio. I'm wanting to get 4.56 gears. I am currently running 35s. I drive a good 800 mile trip every month because I work out of state. Thing is, I don't know what to order. I know I'll need a new carrier, but will I be able to keep my factory posi track? And what's a good brand that won't devour my wallet?

I'm familiar with the common gear ratios (3:08, 3.42, 3:72, etc.) and the fact that higher ratios are better for heavier work loads. But why the big jump to a 4:56 for a 5.3L V8 engine? Sorry to ask, but I'm just trying to understand this stuff better.

Making up for going to a much heavier mass 35" tall tire. The bigger the tire the deeper the gear set to compensate. In his case it will be better than the factory 3.08's and stock rubber were performance wise by quite a bit. More or less on par with a 3.73 geared truck with stock tires. If you crunch the numbers going with a 31.65" tall tire you need 4.10 to match the rpm of 35's and 4.56. But with the heavier mass it will be more on par performance wise to a 3.73 truck. Great upgrade none the less.

If he wanted close to stock performance he would go to a 3.73. But why do all that work to have crappy stock 3.08 equivalent performance? The higher the ratio the easier it is for the truck to turn them thus less strain on the tranny. 4.10 would be a minimum but just to help turn the extra weight of the tires as well as for it to launch better, 4.56s FTW!

I'm running 35s on 22s. So if I go up in gear ratio then my truck won't have as much trouble finder which gear to be in to turn my tires.

Thanks guys. I had no idea that rear end gear ratios had anything to do with tire/wheel size. I thought it only had to do with towing/hauling.

 

I have a 3:42 rear end and factory 18" wheels with All Season tires. I'm considering going to 20" wheels with All Terrain tires (275/60R20). Would I be good with the 3:42 rear end?

That seems to be pretty close to stock size, you'll be fine running 3.42's on the 6 speed tranny

Honestly, the people over at ringpinion.com are very helpful and they also have awesome prices. This is where i bought all my stuff.

 

I also had them send the gears to a shop to get the cryo'd

So what's the word on these 3.23s in the 2015 6.2 all terrains with the 8 speed trans? Just don't seem right everything I've been looking at seems to have them.

Currently, as far as im aware, the trucks with the beefier 9.76" rear axles (standard on 6.2 trucks and trucks with max tow) don't have any options as far as regearing. I haven't looked around lately so the aftermarket world may have caught up and finally produced gears for them

Okay guys, so my 3.08 rear end starting making a howling sound last week and I called my dealership and they said to bring it in. They said it was no longer under warranty due to the lift, so since they already had it apart I told them to put 4.56s in it. They priced me $2500 out the door and it would be a couple of days. Well they called me back that following morning and said that the GM housing can't hold 4.56s and that to make them fit they'd have to dremel around inside the housing. So luckily there was a GM Rep there when they told me this and he told them to return it to 3.08 as if it was under warranty. So I got it fixed for free. Also I might add that they said the cause of the howling was my spider gears weren't getting properly lubricated due to the angle of my driveshaft from the 9" suspension lift. Now I got to thinking, I already got the loan to regear my truck, should I just go to 3.73 or wait until 4.56s are available.. Comments please?

That's a huge difference, GM just doesn't have a GM set of 4.56 gears period. You'll have to go aftermarket, dealers hate that word lol

Well, thing is, they ordered all the parts thru aftermarket vendors. And the vendor said not to do it because it's not worth it and it won't even last as long as my 3.08s. Which only lasted 12k miles. Lol. They also said if they did it they couldn't put a warranty on it, actually nobody would because of the housing. They can put a warranty on 3.73s and its OEM.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
