3.08 to 4.56 Gear swap?

Should be able to get a 2010-2013 3.73 G80 locker for fairly cheap i would think. Would you be putting it in yourself? pinion angle is important. Since you are looking at swapping out the whole rear axle, pinion to ring tooth engagement would still be good.

Yes I will be doing the work myself once I get my hands on the axle. It would make a good video for my YouTube channel.

Clint D.......I swapped my gears on my truck as well and like you mentioned I was not really utilizing my upper gears except maybe on the highway, Mine has the 8 spd with 6.2L and my gas mileage seems to be better also since now it stays in 7-8 gear more without down shifting as much and also stays in 4V more and a lot easier where at highway speeds over 70-75 MPH it would never go to 4V.

My average city highway went from 15-16 to 17-19 mpg even getting up to 20.6 driving from Crosby to the medical center 5 time daily.Best move I could have made and the acceleration is outstanding.

i have only about 20 miles on it so far, it shifts Faster then it did before, I now have 6th gear, and going over highway overpass and hills it stays in 6th gear, it does not down shift like it did before, I love it

Hey man, do you ever feel like you should of did 4.88s instead with the 37s and 24s?I currently have 3.42s and getting the mcgaughys lift soon and 37s on 22s but am having a hard time with going 4.88s or 4.56s.

Hey guys I have a question, I don't know much about differentials or gears but I want to upgrade my stock 3.23 and open diff and according to the manual my v6 has the 8.6 10 bolt. So I found this item on eBay which looks like it will work but I want someone here with more knowledge to double check on it for me. Thank you.

Okay so I was shopping around as I'm ready to pull the trigger on 4.56's for my '15.

 

I'm leaning towards the Truetrac for the rear end. Am I better off or should I dig into the Yukon unit a bit more?

 

Also is it worth to upgrade to the Yukon axle shafts?

 

As far as the front of is concerned do I just need to replace the ring and pinion gear, or will I need a new carrier as well?

 

Sorry about all the questions been a few years since I've done a gear swap, and even those were on muscle cars so this is a whole new ballgame for me

Loved the Yukon in my 02 Silverado, are you upgrading or putting more power to the wheels in the future? If you are, get the new upgraded axle shafts, if not stick with the stock axle shafts. And for the front yes it will only be a ring and pinion replacement since the front is the same as the previous generation trucks.

It's got some upgrades on already, motors running headers and tune. But I was thinking with the 35's the axle shafts might be worth the upgrade?

I was running a tune on my 02 Silverado with 4.88 gears and a hard shifting transmission as well as setting on 37-inch tires. Never had an issue from the time I put in the gears to the time I sold the truck, which was about 2 years. I was hard on the truck and surprisingly I didn't snap an axle, it is completely up to you though

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
