High Pitch Noise When Shifting?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a slightly used 2014 Silverado LT Z71 last night. I noticed when driving there is a high frequency sound coming from somewhere on the driver side, possibly speaker. The sound is so high it is like a dog whistle and gives me a headache when I drive. I have looked all over and some said it may be related to the 4WD switch/transfer case module. Mine was on Auto so I put it on 2 Hi and it still does it. It seems to happen whenever I initially press the gas or it shifts. Anyone have an idea of what this could be?

What's the factory warranty on these things? It only has 13k miles, so I'm hoping this is covered.

That's definitely the same sound from the 4WD system being engaged. Even though it reads 2HI, your truck may not have had the recall work done to fix the issue of the truck staying stuck in 4 wheel drive. I would take it back to the dealer and have them look at that. If that's the problem, the main thing is to get it shifting properly in and out of 4wd. Unfortunately you'll have to live with that high pitch squeel of the 4WD system. They all do it and there is no solution.

Thanks for the info. So this shouldn't happen in 2Hi, right? I'm fine with it in 4WD. I'm going to take it to a Chevy dealer tonight or tomorrow(bought from a Mazda dealer).

This is a well documented issue with it's on thread. I'm on mobile and can't quote right now but maybe some gentlemen and a scholar can share a link.

Correct it should not happen in 2HI. If I had to guess, I'd say your truck may be stuck in 4WD right now.

I figured it wouldn't be since I took some turns into parking lots and didn't notice any binding. That could be that it was stuck in Auto though. When I take my foot off the brake it does not move forward very quickly, which I've noticed that happen in my other 4WDs. I suspect you are on to something with this.

You were right. 2Hi wasn't fully engaged. Once it was, the sound went away. Thanks again for your help!

I have had the exact same issues you've described with mine. I took it in a few months ago to the dealership and they said it was a "normal engine noise". Does it make the noise at all for you anymore since theyve fixed it?

Awesome glad you got it worked out!

It should not. The high pitched "squeal" is electrical in nature when the 4WD system is engaged, whether it's Auto, 4HI, or 4LO. If your knob is set to 2HI and you're still hearing it, the 4WD system is still engaged and you need to get it serviced. There was a recall put out for this.

Recall aside, assuming your truck is functioning normally, the squeal is a normal sound when 4WD is engaged and you don't need to worry. It's annoying no doubt, but it's normal and all current model GM trucks do it.
