Lifted Silverado - something feels loose on rear passenger side

Yeah, I think something is no right. I am running the spacers because the front is wider than the back. I might try to take them off when it gets a little warmer to see if that makes a difference.

Do you have a torque wrench? You can buy a 1/2" drive ratcheting torque wrench from Harbor Freight for around $10. Try torqing your rear U-bolts. Since they put in lift blocks, you may have a bit of play as the new u-bolts settle/stretch. You'll need a set of metric sockets too.

I jacked the rear up and was shaking the tire back and forth. There is definitely play, but it looks like the rim, spacer, and brake drum are all moving in and out? Is that normal? Both sides do it, but the passenger rear moves more for sure and I think this might be the noise I am hearing.

Is this something to worry about?

Nothing should be loose. You should be able to spin the wheel freely with no back and forth movement.

Man that's awful. I wouldn't drive it. It may be the clips on the axle. Seams like with that much play it would be leaking

You had damn well better not drive it like that. You're going to kill somebody. If you're not mechanically inclined, you gotta find a mechanic buddy that can figure out what's wrong. If the C-clip is screwed up the right axle shaft could come flying off.

I know what it is. The noise you hear is one of your rear shocks. After I had my lift installed a had a noise when hitting bumps at low speed and it was the upper shock bolt. Shock didn't feel loose but when I put a wrench on it I was able to tighten it a good bit and the noise went away and hasn't returned.

You do not think it is the noise in the video? I do think it sounds more like a shock bushing too. I took it back to the 4x4 shop last Saturday and he said they checked everything as far as lift and shocks and they were all tight. He said some play in the C clip is normal in these trucks.

I will have try and get under there and double check the bolts myself.

If I bring it into the Chevy dealer do you think they will give me a hard time and blame the lift and wheels?i have not even out 3000 miles since I got the lift put on.

Carry it to the dealer and have them look at it. The noise in the video is not a shock, its coming from the rear axle. I can't tell from the video how you are moving the tire, side to side, push and pull, or a combination of that. It could be a C-clip, could be a bad bearing, bad axle, faulty housing, or all of the above.

Just an update. I got under the truck for a few minutes this morning before I had to leave for work and cranked the top and bottom shock bolts down pretty good on the passenger side. They were definitely loose. I drove to work today and it seems that was causing the noise that has been driving me crazy the past month. It feels like I am driving a new truck again. I am going to check the other side this weekend too.

A little upset that the shop who put the lift on said they checked the shocks and everything was tight.

Do you still think I should take it into the shop about the hub moving in and out? I have to push and pull pretty hard to get it to make the noise when I have it jacked up.

I am definitely going to ask them about it we I get my next oil change, but I am at 50% oil life right now.

ASAP take it to the shop and get it on a lift so they can check everything and ask them to show you while it's on the lift. Like Muddkatt said it is something to do with the rear end.

If you are afraid of the dealer giving you crap about the lift, have a GOOD independent shop look at it first. While loose shocks "could" make noise, they have NOTHING to do with the wheel, rotor moving like the video shows.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Hopefully that really is all it was like mine and you can continue to enjoy your lifted truck.

    • I agree, simplicity and reliability matter more as vehicles get more complicated. A V8 work truck option with fewer electronic features and a stronger warranty would definitely appeal to a lot of buyers who use their trucks for real work. Customizing it with trusted outfitters is often the best way to get exactly what you need.webcrimsNY
    • I’ve heard similar complaints from newer vehicles where the factory “premium” systems don’t always live up to expectations. A good installer should be able to improve the sound without turning it into a bass-heavy setup. I’d look into upgrading the front speakers, adding a quality DSP amplifier, and possibly improving sound deadening first—those changes usually make a much bigger difference than just adding a subwoofer. Hopefully someone local can recommend a reputable installer in the Las Vegas/St. George area.
    • Do you remember that Harley Davidson was more successful (solvent) when it produced about 60% of the market demand (by design) and forced wait times of up to three years? Even when your turn came around it was, "Take what we are giving you or move to the back of the line and start over". HUGE markup's were 'normalized' and dealer killed. 40% markup and no floor plan? What's not to love? Greed will kill them yet. They have surplus production and customer base is tanking. And still they think nosebleed pricing will work.
    • The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.
    • Okiee dokie there bud, way to take things to the extreme.   I guess you missed the whole point and take things way to serious. I installed different EV6 style injectors that just so happen to be larger in my car running the same LQ4 engine and with a better spray pattern than the stock style injectors and I noticed no difference in the idle quality. Kinda was my round about way of saying that even if you put the same size but better style injectors in your truck, you will likely see the same thing.    I'm sure you're great to have conversations with in person if that's how you act through a keyboard. One little things sets you off and now I guess my dick is all up in your face.
