Lift Gate Tie Downs?

I run the Bull Ring collapsible tie downs in my 6 1/2 ft truck bed and they are great. I mainly use them when strapping down my quad in the bed. The bed is still a little too short to fold up the tail gate with the quad, as the tail gate can only go up about 1/2 way, so I just leave it down.

I can live with this, but I was thinking about picking up an enduro dirt bike in the near future and wanted to be able to use the carrier (below) that I used to use when I transported my old MX bike with my Trailblazer. The problem is that the inside of the tail gate does not seem to have any apparent way to attach tie down loops/hooks. I basically want to fold it up half way and tie a tail gate loop/hook to one of the Bull Ring tie downs in the side of the bed.

Has anyone found a solution for this? If so, please provide details and a pic if possible.

I used to hook a tie down from the safety hook location on the hitch, around the top edge of the tail gate, then to somewhere in the bed, like the rear bull ring. Just make sure the tie down isn't touching paint.

Another option is a hitch extender, they make like 12-18" versions, with should get the bike beyond a tail gate that is open.

The only downfall here is the tolerance in hitch to receiver that would allow the bike carrier to rotate. You basically need a nut and bolt instead a pin to clamp the extender down. You can weld the nut inside the hitch extender or make a sheet metal nut holder that wedges inside the extender.

Yeah, I guess a Hitch Receiver Extension is always a possible option.

But I'm still hoping for a cleaner option.

Probably not quite secure enough but, if you loop your tailgate keeper cables around the latch studs on the side of the bed it holds the tailgate at about 50% closed. You could always just pull the tailgate off and leave it at home? I've never taken mine off but, seems kinda risky to dent / scratch it.

Okay I was thinking about this more and stuck my head out into the garage to look at my truck, how about this: Disconnect the support cables from the bedside, hook a ratchet strap into the end that normally connects to the stud on the bed and run that strap, maybe one on each side, maybe cross them to opposite sides of the bed and you should be good to go.

It seems in Previous years (maybe I'm thinking back to my s-10 days) that you could unhook the cables and hook them up to where the latch goes and it would hold the tailgate at the mid way position.

I have one of these things. But mine is made by Moto Tot. Used it to carry my Suzuki gsxr from NY to Maryland all the time.

Load and unload the bike with a friend.
