so i took my 2006 2500hd into shop ..CEL would go on on the freeway once in a while ..code 0300..random misfire...100.00 diagnostic....just got a call #7 injector bad ... 655,64 to replace

is this a fair price?

I'll assume that you are talking gas engine. I personally would price out the injector, it should be quite a bit less then the quote. Then just grab a couple of drink and a friend and change it yourself. I haven't done an injector but can't see it being too hard to replace.

Injectors are not hard to do, look up on YouTube you might even be able to fit with that quote a set up with the intake manifold injectors and better fuel rails plus injectors for that price or a little bit more. You always get raped from shops.

It looks like $250 of that is for testing and diagnosis which they've probably already done. So I assume they've already spent your $250 on the testing and diagnosis.

 

Another $80 for using fuel system cleaner which I'm assuming they haven't done yet. Often a cleaner will solve a gummed up injector issue. Especially if you've been buying cheap-ass, no-brand gas. So, if your buying crappy gas, skip having them put an injector in and only put in a bottle of Techron and see if the problem goes away within a tank of gas. If it doesn't, or If your buying top-tier gasoline, then the injector may be bad and you don't need the cleaner, only the injector.

 

Check out online videos and injector prices on line and see if the cost savings and time are worth the difference to you. It should be an easy decision then.

engine is 6.0 gas...19.00 for inj.cleaner +59.95 labor=79.95 155.00 compression/leak down test injector 199.90 +99.95labor=299.85 100.00 diagnosis 655,64 total.....this is my dads truck and he said to fix injector when they called..my problem is they never mentioned leak down test or injector cleaning and 59.95 for pouring cleaner in tank?is it me or are they getting over?

$80 for fuel system/injector cleaning. Ripoff it's just pouring a bottle in your tank. Can be worthwhile if they have a pressurized tank hooked up to the fuel injection rail forcing it through the injectors (as small stuff will collect on the little screen on top of each injector).

 

I bought a full set of fuel injectors for my truck [same manufacturer/part number] for under $300 from either Amazon or Ebay, and they've been working good for me for the last year. They are easy to replace, only special tool you need is to disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail.

 

The filter on the fuel pump is...not great and not easily replaceable. I prevented further problems [i had a rusted out fuel pump that managed to pump the rust through as well as bad fuel] by putting an inline fuel filter on my truck [GM had them on '03 and earlier models, switched to a cheap sock in the fuel pump for later models]. There's more to it than that but still now worth $60. They hook up a $20 can of GM (overpriced) brand of "fuel system" cleaner directly to the fuel injection system on the engine and they follow a certain protocol. They don't just pour a can in the tank.

Yes, it SHOULD be that. But there are certainly some garages that will charge that to pour a bottle in the tank. Only way to know is to talk to them and confirm what they will do. Well, and then hope/watch to make sure they do it.

The GM fuel system cleaner is actually fairly good if they do it right. If they just pour a bottle into the fuel tank then they are not doing it right.

 

BG44K is a great product and has a few extra things in it vs the GM Fuel System Cleaner and Techron. BG also has a great fuel system cleaning machine and flush machines as well and many shops and even dealers have it. I'd recommend it. Try to stick to top tier fuels as well, they pay off in the long run.

So. got it done..was told all fixed,but had to drive a hundred miles to go thru drive cycle before it will pass smog....got a call from a friend sunday to go to SUPERBOWL...jump in truck to go ,,get on freeway CEL comes on truck shuts down,wont start had to have truck towed home...missed game...great job QUALITY TUNE UP...2000 dollars wasted for an injector that didn't fix shit...now what?

1) Take it back to the offending dealer, they will pull the codes again, let us know.

655.64 for the bill.........1250.00 for the superbowl ticket 150.00 for tow home.... now code is the same p0300 random misfire, that it's always been..truth be told the ticket got sold for a grand ..but still...now the shop wants me to tow it back to them...i can throw money at parts just as easy..and for a whole lot less than 200,00 for an injector...and shouldn't that compression/leakdown test be under diagnosis?

ok so not only did all the things happen that cost me to go to the Superbowl...SEE 'COST OF FUEL INJECTOR' post..now i go to start it so i can move it to get it towed back to shop.REDUCED ENGINE POWER comes up.what is that?now all that was wrong in the first place was the CEL came on once in a while on the freeway.now they changed #7 injector..said it was fixed and since then truck has died,missed the game had to pay for tow home,and now REDUCED ENGINE POWER comes on...where do i start now?please help

That is "Limp home mode" . The truck has a code, could be a wire on an injector, or engine temp sensor unplugged. Its probably something simple ..

Pull the codes and just look at what was touched, dont think too deep on it, you will nail it!, good luck!
