exterior led lighting

I was thinking about some exterior leds to make it easier to see the step bars at night. My initial thought was to wire it in with the headlights so that when the unlock button is pushed it will light them up from a distance. The issue with that is that they will be on the whole time the headlights are on. Anyone have any suggestion on what else I could hook to that could be triggered by remote? Anyone done anything like this another way?

If the dome light comes on when you hit the unlock button hook them there.

You can use the reverse lamp circuit, they will come on at night when you unlock the vehicle. They will also turn on when in reverse and illuminate the sides of the truck.
