Need info on correct replacement spare tire/wheel please

Hello

I am new to this forum, but I am here searching for help on my '15 Sierra 1500, SLT. I recently crawled under my truck to disconnect the rear back up camera so that I could remove the tailgate. While under I noticed that the spare tire is gone, and there is about 6in of cable hanging there.

I called two well known dealers/shops yesterday searching for prices on a new tire hoist, tire, and wheel. Both places told me based off of the VIN that the spare tire was a GoodYear Rangler HP, 245/70/17. They also both quoted the spare wheel as an "aluminum" wheel, that also required a $50 core charge in addition to the wheel cost. I decided to make an insurance claim as my deductible is just $250, and I know I can piece this back together myself for quite a bit less.

Today I went to one of the dealers to get an actual estimate to submit to the insurance company. The shop today now says that the spare is a standard steel wheel. Can anyone confirm that the wheel should in fact be a black steel 17 inch wheel?

Thanks for you help!

Run your vin. Most have steel. My friends SLT has a steel spare.

Thanks for the info guys. Running the VIN is what is confusing to me. Yesterday both shops pulled part numbers by using my VIN. Both said I needed an aluminum spare... Today the same place said it was a steel wheel based off the VIN. I'm starting to think the guy on the phone yesterday was maybe looking at the wrong part, or maybe just looking up a standard wheel, not the spare.

Im gonna stop at the other dealership tomorrow and see what they have to say. They quoted me $147 for the spare wheel..All set and done for the wheel, valve stem, tire, mounting, wheel hoist, labor, and tax, it came to $700.

I am amazed it was stolen. I have had one flat on my current truck and it took hours to get the spare down. The cable was corroded as all heck and just wouldn't budge. I suggest you pack the winch with grease in case you ever need it. This is for northern trucks

BTW steel rim. If you put another aluminum rim on, you may have just another cable hanging there in time

The access to the crank inlet is in fact locked. They however just cut the cable holding the tire from underneath. I assume a battery operated saw zaw would score them a $160 tire in about 10 seconds.

Ditto on my 14 LT, with the stock Goodyear SR-A's I've had plenty of opportunities to mount it up and use it.

This happened to me about a year and a half ago. I bought all the parts separate and got reimbursed from insurance, just like you did.

Well this just adds to the confusion or controversy. Today I went to the other GM dealership, actually where I bought the truck from. According to them when they run the VIN, it does in fact come back as the spare being an aluminum wheel, part #23369305 which is an aluminum 17x7 wheel. The other dealership from yesterday was quoting part #9596426. Hmm..maybe I'll see if I can get reimbursed through insurance for the aluminum wheel and labor for install of the lift, and just do it all myself with a steel wheel? Today the quote came to $842 when you figure in the aluminum wheel along with the $50 core charge.
