ABS Problem at random

Recommended Posts

today for the second time since i've owned the truck the abs activated for about 2 seconds for no apparent reason. it happens at under 15 miles per hour and only when braking while the wheels were turned to the right ???

after the first time i replaced the fluid in all the lines which was over a month ago

the manual has trouble codes for erratic or open circuit abs sensors none of which have never gone off

does any one know exactly where the ground strap is between the bed and frame??? only thing i can guess

any suggestions much appreciated

did you happen to hit a bump when it went off?

i think you may need to bleed the brakes again if this started after you changed the fluid may be air in the line , the only thing else would be an intermit wheel sensor but should get a code and it should turn off the abs. but my 2001 c1500 will do the same thing if you are braking in a turn in any direction even more if the road is bumpy

I have several Zaino customers including myself that have seen this problem in 02' & 03' Escalade's, we have talked to Cady about this problem and to our surprise they never heard of that before, sure.

Check your front wheel bearings. When they wear the sensor cannot read the spindle rotations corectly and the computer sees the front and rear wheels moving at diffrent speeds. It's more pronounced durring a hard turn, such as parking.

Good Luck.

The best thing to do is to put the truck on a scan tool and see if it actually is a wheel sensor that is tripping the ABS pump.

Assuming it is a wheel sensor, on other cars, I've seen the ABS collar slipping on the brake rotor, and throwing off the sensor pulse. Did you have any of the rotors replaced recently? We've gone through some Wagner rotors with loose ABS collars. Also if you can see the collar, hit it with some brake clean and clean off the teeth. A metalic object embedded in the teeth my cause a problem too. The teeth tend to get packed with grease and dirt, then it gets a liberal coating of semi-metallic brake pad dust.

Another thing to check is the ABS wheel sensor wiring. At full steering deflection, the wire may be being stretched off the connector.

Could even be the output speed sensor off the trans, or it could be a loose connection at the ABS module. Like I said, best to check it with a scan tool first.

The ground strap for the chassis to body is on the pass side trans to eng bolt. I don't think the bed is grounded by a strap to the chassis.

Good luck.

thanks for the help so far guys

ryranbabz71 - no bump .i expect it to go off when i hit a bump or something

G-rott -- i think your probably right

this morning while driving with the windows down and slightly turning to the right to accelerate out i heard what sounded like a wire rubbing against the inside of the wheel but i could feel it in the steerign wheel

i got home and pulled the wheel and rotor

when i grbbed hold of the hub to check it for freeplay it gave in all directions almost 1/8"

i think i found my problem

seems to be a dealer only item and i'll bet expensive

called a couple of salvage yards and even their getting 150.00 a piece for them

i found a guy that's got one for 35.00 but can't get it til tues.

i found a few for 4WD on ebay , the only difference seems to be mine has a backplate on it and the 4WD version has the hole for a splined shaft

does anyone know if i can take my backplate off and put it on the back of one of these 4WD hub/bearing assemblies???

Thanks

again

Todd

    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
    • I wonder kind of nuts and bolts they will come up with next? Jim
    • “It should be recognized, however, that there becomes a point where fuel economy oils do not make much economic sense for the end consumer—we talk about a fuel saving of ~€100 compared to a risk of €1000 Euros if the oil is too thin and causes increased engine wear rates. However, the benefit of these oils accrues to the car manufacturers. If their vehicles can save 1–2% fuel by using a special fuel economy lubricant, then that OEM can drastically reduce the amount of fines they need to pay.”   I liked this and the following paragraph as well but it’s really only touching the beginning of the benefits OEMs see from spec’ing these oils. After you factor in “out of warranty” service work and new car sales when these engines fail before their time, it’s a good racket for them. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!
