Port & Direct Injection Combo Engines Solves Valve Buildup Issue

Combination direct injection and port injection in one engine. That seems to be the solution for the valve buildup issue from direct injection only engines. I had heard a while back that Toyota was testing this technology and I believe has started using it in some of their vehicles. Now it appears Ford is going to be implementing it in their new Ecoboost engines. If that's the case that's two different manufacturers utilizing this approach. We'll see what happens over time but we'll probably see Chevrolet and other manufacturers with DI engines making this transition. Something has to change there's just no way a DI-only engine has the longevity of an older port injection engine.

This is great IMO. GM rarely ever comes out with the next best idea first, but they usually take others good ideas and improve upon them. I'll be looking for a new truck in 2018-2019 so hopefully this will be part of the update.

That's a good thought they usually follow the crowd pretty well. I'll also be keeping my eye on this. I may be unloading mine before the warranty is up just to be safe. I just don't trust this DI engine to last but we'll see. I have an oil catch can, I only use Shell 89 gasoline, and I've been keeping up with BG induction services every 15,000 miles so we'll see how long she goes before the problems start creeping up.

Not sure that it will cure some engines that suck oil thru the PCV line like someone sucking a soda thru a straw. My 2006 Cadillac CTS 3.6L, that thing drinks oil thru the PCV. I had to install an Elite Engineering catch can on it. Just last weekend, I dumped the can. Drove about 40 miles on Sunday, then the wife took the car on about a 370 mile round trip on Tuesday for a funeral event. Dumped the can again last night after her trip... almost 5 oz of oil. Since I have changed the oil about 900 miles ago, the car has "used" almost 1/2 quart and almost the very same amount has been captured by the catch can in that time frame. Not sure any port injection could keep intake valves clean with all that going on. Many 3.6L CTS owners complain of high oil consumption. I know how it is happening.

What do you mean? Nothing solves the problem of oil coming from the PCV system in the first place but this new design solves the problem of the buildup on the valves by washing them clean. So you get the fuel economy and horsepower of direct injection along with the cleaning action of port injection.

Does it? Manufactures will default ultimately to GDI due to it's obvious efficiency/emissions benefits! With your mentioned engine....A.K.A. Combo Injection wouldn't the obvious heavy throttle engine load burden be ignited under GDI and light engine throttle load be ignited under Port injection? I think you answered your question yourself, "Nothing solves the problem of oil coming from the PCV system"

 

Eventually the manufactures will ultimately choose GDI with obvious added components & PRICE in our future to handle the carbon buildup on backside of intake valves once and for all......

port injection is the cleaner, direct injection does not touch valves.

 

Direct injection increases power by a cool charge and defying long timing dwells associated with big camshafts.

 

in fact, that is the only reason multiport fuel injection wins over carburators...the cams are bigger, because they can.

draft timing can be defied in other words.

the closer they get the bottom to zero vacuum..the bigger the volume of compression to have.

 

the direct takes it to another level.

one can even have no throttle plate at all, like a diesel.

 

it is interesting, but needs big power to run the pressures.

my favorite to this day is the spider stuff from 96-98..

it even cleans its own intake. throttle body never needs anything.

Like I said, "Great job FORD your cleaning the valves less than half the time" Wonderful better put that in your commercials too!" We at FORD solved the proverbial problem of CARBON/CAKING VALVE SEATS!

Joke! Problems is still present and obviously more so with that crap 3.5 twin turbo sucking, poor MPG, how many problems has this little engine created for the average owner? NOPE: AMERICICANS think FORD is better than sliced bread! Ridiculous just clean the crap up and charge the customer 500.00 bucks more and have customer dump/purge or whatever some freaking box that has trapped all that shit at every oil change.......Jeesh rocket science!

But darn close. There have been many internal manifold pictures I have seen of before using a catch can and after. A quality catch can will stop most of the crud going thru the PCV.

the only reason that any manufacturer would mix these technologies is due to the fact that injectors reach their limit at some point. When the DI injectors reach their duty cycle.....and you need more fuel, you add fuel in the intake. Simple as that!! Of course, the marketing behind the technical reason is interesting, but not the motivator by the OEM. This adds a whole additional fuel control point, and just makes things more complicated. Not what any engineer would want..but must integrate to solve the problem of "how can I get more power?". You will see this more and more as power levels continue to rise....unless DI systems can change to deliver more fuel.
